Hotel artwork: how hotels choose art, from the lobby to the guest room

Hotel artwork is a property's art program: the arrival piece in the lobby, the restaurant and bar works, the rhythm of the corridors and the guest room art, planned to one concept and bought within a budget per key. Public spaces usually carry originals and commissions, and guest rooms usually carry editions repeated with variation. Below is how I would plan it, zone by zone, for a boutique or independent hotel, and the honest answer for guests: where hotel art comes from and whether you can buy it.

A homeowner can buy one painting and stop. A hotel has to tell one story across a lobby, a bar, corridors and many guest rooms that look alike, and have it on the walls by opening day. I have spent more than 15 years in the art world, since 2010, and my hospitality work includes collections built while collaborating with luxury hospitality leaders. If you are planning one now, the service itself is on art for boutique hotels.

What hotel artwork has to do for a property

Hotel artwork, like all hospitality art, has three jobs: tell guests where they are, give each zone the right intensity, and survive years of hard use. First, a guest should know which city and which building they are in the moment they arrive, and the strongest collections do this with artists and makers connected to the place, not with postcards of its skyline. The second is volume: a statement at arrival, rhythm in the corridors, calm in the rooms. The third is practical: daylight, cleaning and security.

Plan diagram of a hotel art program in five zones: the lobby with one large arrival piece at the end of the entry sightline, the restaurant and bar with one work, a corridor with works at a steady interval between the room doors, guest rooms with one work above each bed, and a suite with originals, each zone labelled with its usual approach: original, commission or edition

The lobby: the photograph every guest takes

The lobby carries the arrival piece, the one work guests remember and photograph, so I would choose it, and commission it where the concept calls for it, before anything else. Hotel lobby art is sized for the architecture, not for a living room: it has to read from the doors, the desk and the far seating. The wall behind the desk looks obvious on a plan, but staff and a queue stand in front of it, so the work clears their heads or faces the entrance.

Plan of a hotel lobby: sightlines from the entry doors, the front of the reception desk and the seating all meet at one large arrival piece on the wall facing the doors, while the wall behind the desk sits behind the staff and the queue
Figure 2The arrival piece hangs where every view in the lobby meets.
Two elevations of the wall behind a hotel reception desk: the same work hung on the 57 to 60 inch eye level band sits behind the heads of the staff and the queue, and hung above their heads it stays in view from the doors
Figure 3Behind the desk, heads sit on the eye level band.

A single large painting, a relief or a sculptural work usually holds that distance better than a group of small pieces. For proportion, see large wall art ideas, and for works this size, framing and installing large scale art.

Two elevations of the same lobby wall under a high ceiling: a group of six small frames sized for a living room looks lost, while one large work sized for the wall holds it, both centered on the 57 to 60 inch eye level band
Figure 4A living room group gets lost; one large work holds the wall.

Restaurants, bars and corridors

Restaurant and bar art is seen at night, from seats, under low light. It needs strong contrast, surfaces that tolerate heat and steam, and a height judged from the chairs. A bar usually wants one memorable gesture rather than many small works. A hotel restaurant follows the same rules as any other; I cover them on art for restaurants.

Corridors are seen on the move, so they need rhythm more than statements. A series hung at a steady interval, each center on the same eye level line of 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm), carries the story from the elevator to the door. A different series on each floor helps guests tell the floors apart.

Figure 5One work per stretch of wall, every center on the same line.

Guest rooms: editions, repetition and variety

Hotel room art is where a collection is tested: a work that looks right in one room has to look right in every room of that type, and survive housekeeping. Guest rooms usually carry editions, a family of related works chosen and framed as a set, so the lobby's voice continues without repeating the arrival piece. Variety comes from rotation: several images spread across the floors, so neighbors rarely share a picture. Above the bed, the rules of a home apply.

Over a pillow, acrylic glazing is lighter and safer than glass. For the same calm at home, see art above a bed.

Budget per key: how a hotel art program is planned and staged

Budget per key is the art budget expressed per guest room, or key, the unit hotel projects use to budget their fit out. Ask first what the number includes: some owners count only the guest rooms, others fold in the lobby, restaurants and corridors. In most cases a budget goes further with a private curator: there is no gallery margin and no bidding war on top of the work, so in many cases buying through me is more affordable than buying through a gallery or at a large auction. That price includes a private consultation that covers the whole property, and my work with you until the art is on the wall. I represent the client, not a roster of artists, so I can reach out to any artist in the world the concept needs.

The program runs in a fixed order: a written concept, approved before a single work is sourced; an artwork schedule giving every area a line with the location, type of work, size and budget; then sourcing, commissions first because they take longest. Every stage is planned backward from the opening date; how long it takes depends on the scope, so the art belongs in the plan while walls and lighting are still being designed. More on how art for hotels and hospitality is made, and on what an art advisor costs.

Originals, editions and commissions

An original is a unique work, and it belongs where guests stop and look: the lobby, the bar, the suites. A commission is an original made for the property, the right answer when the concept needs a subject, a size or a local story that does not exist yet. An edition is one of a limited, numbered run printed from an artist's image, usually by a fine art print studio, and it is how a hotel brings real artists into every guest room. What I avoid is generic hotel wall art: the open edition decor print, produced without limit, which fills a wall and tells guests nothing about where they are.

Decision diagram: where guests stop, an original if the right work exists, or a commission if it has to be made; where guests pass, a limited edition, never an open edition decor print
Figure 7Originals where guests stop, editions where they pass.

Where hotel art comes from, and can a guest buy it

Hotel art usually comes from an art program run by a consultant or curator, or from decor prints bought in volume. Loved a piece during a stay? Ask at the front desk: some properties can name their artists. If the work is an edition, the artist or the studio that printed it may still sell one from the run. Some hotels sell work in their shop, and after a renovation, surplus and liquidation sellers resell guest room art. If what you loved was the calm of the room, I can build that for your home.

Working with a hotel art consultant

A hotel art consultant should give you a written concept rooted in the place and the brand, an artwork schedule you can track, and one approved budget. I work inside the design team's scheme and the brand's standards, not around them, whether the owner brings me in directly or the design firm does. Every piece is signed off before anything is ordered. Printmakers and framers work to my brief, my own installation team hangs the works, after hours where guests are already staying, and I can provide a certificate of insurance naming the owner or managing agent on request. How I take on a property is on art for boutique hotels.

I am based in Tenafly, in Bergen County, New Jersey, and work across New Jersey, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere; for projects in the city, see art curator in New York.

Questions

Questions people ask

Where do hotels get their artwork?

Hotels usually get their artwork through an art program run by a consultant or curator. The consultant sources originals from artists and galleries, commissions the signature works for the lobby and the bar, and has limited editions produced by print studios for the guest rooms. Some properties buy decor prints in volume from suppliers instead. For a boutique hotel, I would plan the whole program to one written concept and one budget, from the arrival piece to the last corridor.

Where can I find hotel art for sale?

Hotel art for sale turns up in four places. Ask the hotel first: some properties can name the artist of a work you liked. If the piece is a limited edition, the artist or the print studio may still sell one from the run. Some hotels sell work in their shop. After a renovation, surplus and liquidation sellers resell guest room art. If you want the feeling rather than the exact piece, a curator can find or commission something close for your home.

How to decorate a room like a hotel?

To decorate a room like a hotel, choose one calm work in one voice and hang it with hotel discipline. Above the bed, the work should be about two thirds as wide as the headboard and hang 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) above it, fixed on two points. Keep the frames in one family, the palette quiet and the lighting soft, and leave the other walls mostly bare. A hotel room feels calm because nothing on its walls competes.

What should a hotel lobby have?

A hotel lobby should have one arrival piece: a work sized for the architecture that tells guests where they are the moment they walk in. It should read from the entrance, the desk and the seating, belong to the city and the building rather than repeat a skyline cliche, and be lit as carefully as it is chosen. Everything else in the lobby, from seating to signage, should leave that work the space to be seen.

What does budget per key mean for hotel art?

Budget per key is a hotel's art budget expressed per guest room, or key. Some owners count only the guest rooms, others include the lobby, restaurants and corridors, so the first question is what the number covers. In most cases a budget per key goes further through a private curator, because there is no gallery margin or auction bidding on top of the work. The price includes a private consultation for the whole property, and I represent the property, not a roster of artists.

How many artworks does a hotel need?

The number of artworks a hotel needs comes from the artwork schedule, not from a formula. I would walk the plans and give every wall that matters a line: the arrival piece and the public spaces, each restaurant and bar, a steady rhythm along each corridor, then each guest room type, with its walls above the bed, the desk and the entry, multiplied by the number of rooms of that type. Suites get their own lines. The total follows from the plans.

Send me one photo of the wall, and a line about the space. I will tell you what I see.
