A big empty wall makes most people want to fill it, and filling it is usually where it goes wrong: many small things spread across a surface that needed one decision. After more than 15 years in the art world, in museums, in a gallery and in homes, I treat a large wall as a stage for one idea. These are the ways that work, and how to size them.
Seven ways to fill a large wall
Each of these is one decision, not a scatter. If you are choosing between one large piece and several small ones, one large piece is almost always the stronger answer; several small works hold a big wall only when they read as one group.
One large work. The strongest answer, and the calmest. In a villa in Hod Hasharon, one large figurative work on the concrete wall beside the sofa holds the whole open plan, from the dining table at the far end to the sofa beneath it.
A pair. Two works of the same size and language, hung close, read as one statement.
A triptych. Three panels hung as one image, with narrow, exact gaps.
A grid. Six, nine or twelve works of the same size in a strict grid: a series of prints, photographs or small paintings.
A salon gallery wall. Many works in mixed sizes held by one outer edge; the method is in gallery wall ideas.
One tall work on a tall, narrow wall, or on the end wall of a long space.
One long horizontal work above a long sofa or sideboard.
Textiles, reliefs and large works on paper belong on this list too: a tapestry or a relief brings texture a flat print cannot.
How big should the art be?
The 2/3 rule for wall art says a work above furniture should span about two thirds of that furniture's width; on a bare wall, the art is sized to the wall and to the distance you see it from.

Above furniture: about two thirds of the width of the sofa, bed or sideboard below, with 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) above a sofa or bed and 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) above a sideboard or console. The details for sofas are in art above a couch.
On a bare wall: the work, or the group, taking up about two thirds of the wall's width is a common starting point, with at least 12 inches (30 cm) of wall at each side. One retailer, Minted, suggests filling 60 to 75 percent of the wall. Keep the center at 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor.
From across the room: the farther away the wall is seen from, the larger the work needs to be. Measure where people will usually stand or sit when they look at it, and size from there, not from the tape measure against the wall.

The most common mistake with large walls is buying one size too small. When in doubt between two sizes, the larger one is almost always right, provided the work is strong enough to carry it.
Tall and double height walls
On a tall wall, eye level still matters, but the work also has to answer the architecture. In a sea view villa in Caesarea, the wall needed a work at real scale: 3.5 meters. A work that size is almost never waiting in a gallery, so I commissioned a triptych of storks from an Italian artist, with the scale, the palette and the subject decided for that house. From across the room the three panels read as one composition, so they were hung as one: on a triptych, the gaps are part of the image.

In a private estate in Caesarea, the double height hall has a pale stone wall rising above the fireplace. Large works sourced from France, built from layered pigments with 18k gold detailing, hold it. Gold takes light differently from pigment, so the surface changes as the daylight moves and again under the sconces at night. On a wall like that, material presence matters as much as size.

A long wall, in a hallway or an open plan, is best divided into zones, each with its own center: one work above the sofa, a pair beside the dining table, with open wall between them. Do not stretch one small group across the whole length. If the wall is one uninterrupted surface, a long horizontal work or a single row of works on one centerline carries it.

Check the scale in the space
Tape the outline of the work on the wall, or pin up paper cut to size, and look at it for a few days from the sofa, the door and the far end of the room. It is the simplest step in the process, and it prevents the mistake that is hardest to undo.
Original, edition or print
Large canvas prints and oversized wall art fill a wall quickly, but a big wall magnifies everything, including a thin image. Getting it through the door
Measure every door, stair turn and elevator on the route before you buy. Very large canvases can sometimes travel rolled and be restretched on site, a decision made with the artist, never without.
