Most offices get their art the way they get their carpet: something has to be there, it should not offend anyone, and the designer will handle it. The result is the office art you see in every waiting room, chosen so nobody objects, so nobody looks. The work on your wall speaks before you do.
1. Choose: what should the art in your office say?
Start with who you really are, not the brand book: what you love, where you come from, how the day should feel. Then choose for who walks in: calm for patients, steadiness for a firm's clients. Give each area one job: welcome at reception, focus in the meeting space, rhythm along the corridor, something personal in your own office. 2. Plan: decide the art walls while the drawings are open
If you are building out or moving, the art belongs in the drawings. Decide which walls stay solid for art, where blocking goes behind heavy works, and where picture lights and outlets go. A wall decided early leaves time for a commission; a wall decided the week before the move gets whatever is in stock. I can work from your architect's and designer's plans. Step 2. What to draw on every art wall: the envelope, the blocking band across the art zone, the picture light above it and the outlet behind the work.
3. Buy: fewer, larger, better
One strong work in the room where decisions are made says more than ten small ones in the corridor. Prints suit the back office, signed editions suit a corridor series, and reception and the meeting space deserve originals or a work commissioned for the wall. In most cases the art costs less through me than at a gallery or a large auction, my consultation is part of that price, and I represent you, not a roster of artists (see what an art advisor costs).
Step 3. One large work, or a group with the same outer edge and center.
4. Hang: the height, the size and the spacing
On a wall people pass standing, the center of the work sits 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor; how to hang pictures gives the nail formula and the hardware by weight. A reception anchor takes about two thirds of its wall. In the meeting space everyone sits, so the work goes on the wall the chairs face, never the screen wall, and hangs lower; test the height from a chair with a paper template before anyone drills. A corridor series shares one centerline with equal gaps, as in gallery wall layouts, and a big wall gets one decision, sized with large wall art ideas.
Step 4. Clients stand in reception and sit in the meeting space: test the seated height from the chair.
5. Light: plan it before the work arrives
Aim a ceiling spot or track at the center of the work at about 30 degrees from vertical, with a warm white bulb of 2700 to 3000 K and a color rendering index of 90 or more. 6. Install: after hours, so the office keeps working
I manage production, framing and installation with my own installation team; I carry insurance and can provide a certificate of insurance naming your landlord or managing agent, and I install after hours. A client with a home office in a luxury residence in Caesarea had two loves, horses and music, and those two words were the brief. I looked for artists living and working in the client's country of origin, acquired one existing painting and commissioned a second work from the same artist (see the Caesarea home office). That is the test in any workplace: the art should be true, and it should be yours.

Choose one anchor work sized to hold the wall from the door, rather than several small pieces. It should say something true about the people behind the desk: restraint for a firm, warmth for a clinic, energy for a studio. Plan the lighting for it before it arrives. A corporate art consultant plans, sources and installs art for a company's spaces. The work runs from a short concept drawn from the space and the brand, through works proposed within an approved budget, to framing, delivery, installation and a record of what was bought. I represent the company, not a roster of artists, so I can look for the right work anywhere.
