Financial advisor office decor: art for the space where clients talk about money

Financial advisor office decor is the art and finish of the space where clients talk about money, chosen to feel stable, discreet and personal rather than showy. The meeting space matters most: one strong, calm work does more than a wall of market imagery. Below: the meeting space, reception, what to leave out, the trends that last, clients who collect, and how to buy the art.

A client who has come to talk about money reads the space before anyone speaks. Every wall should say two things: this advisor is steady, and this conversation is private. I have spent more than 15 years in the art world, in established museums and in a gallery I managed in Tel Aviv, and the brief for an advisory office is short: calm, personal, never showy.

Why decor matters where people talk about money

Decor matters here because clients are paying for judgment, and the walls are the first judgment they see. Good financial office decor should not look expensive; it should look settled. A display of wealth on the walls invites the wrong question, about whose money paid for it.

Floor plan of a small advisory office showing the path a client takes from the door to reception, along the corridor to the meeting space and the advisor's own office, with one marked wall in each space for a single work
Figure 1The path a client takes, with one job for each wall: reception sets the tone, the meeting space holds attention, your own office is personal.

Research backs the care but promises nothing. In University of Exeter studies of more than 2,000 office workers, people in spaces with plants and pictures were about 17 percent more productive than people in bare ones, and about 32 percent more when they designed their own space (Knight and Haslam, 2010). The useful finding is the second: people do better in a space they chose.

The meeting space: calm, one strong work, no clutter

Give the meeting space one strong work that rewards a long look, and keep everything else quiet: no awards wall, no row of small prints. Clients may sit there for an hour, so choose a work that holds attention without competing for it: a landscape, a quiet abstraction, a photograph or a work on paper, well framed. If the wall the client faces is behind you, keep the work calm enough to frame you, not pull their eyes from your face. The first piece of art for a financial advisor office belongs here.

Two floor plans of the same meeting space: on the left the work hangs on the wall behind the advisor, where both clients' lines of sight land; on the right it hangs behind the clients, where only the advisor sees it
Figure 2Hang the work where the client looks, usually behind you.

Figure 3About two thirds of the credenza, 6 to 10 inches above it.
Two floor plans of a meeting space with a window: a glazed work on the wall opposite the window reflects the window back to the seated client, while the same work on a wall beside the window sends the reflection away from them
Figure 4Glass opposite a window mirrors it; beside it, the reflection falls away.

This is the approach behind my page on art for wealth management offices.

Reception and the first impression

Reception takes one anchor work that sets the tone in the first minute, because every client sees it. People pass it standing, so center it 57 to 60 inches from the floor, on the wall the eye meets from the door. More on art for reception and the rest of an office.

Two side views: in reception a standing visitor's eyes meet a work centered 57 to 60 inches from the floor; in the meeting space a seated client's eyes sit below that line, looking past the advisor to the work above the credenza
Figure 5Clients stand in reception and sit in the meeting space.

Your own office

Your own office is where personal belongs. For a home office in Caesarea, I chose two works that reflected the client's two loves, horses and music, by artists living and working in the client's country of origin: one existing painting was acquired, and another was specially commissioned from the same artist (the Caesarea home office).

What to avoid: bulls, bears, tickers and slogans

Leave out anything that reads as a sales prop: bull and bear sculptures, ticker and chart imagery, stock skylines and motivational slogans. Much of the finance office wall art sold online is exactly this, and it puts the market in the space during a conversation that may be about a client's fear of it.

More in my guide to office wall art.

The office decor trends worth following are the ones that last: fewer and larger original works, natural texture and landscape, and art by living artists. The test: will you still want to sit across from it in ten years?

Art as a conversation with clients who collect

The art in your office can start a second conversation, with the clients who collect. Some will ask about a work, and a small wall label with the artist, the title and the year invites them to; a few will ask for help with art at home. Then you want a curator to introduce: forward my page for wealth managers, family offices and private bankers and copy me. Introductions are by email, discretion is the default, and I work within your firm's rules. I bring the same approach to investment firms.

I do not give investment advice. If a client asks whether art is a good investment, the research is sobering: a study of 32,928 paintings sold more than once between 1960 and 2013 found that correcting for selection bias cut average annual returns from 8.7 to 6.3 percent, though some styles and top selling artists may do better (Korteweg, Kräussl and Verwijmeren, 2016). More in starting an art collection.

Buying, commissioning or leasing

Buy the main work for the meeting space, commission when a wall needs something made for your firm, and lease only when you want the works to change. My guide to buying, leasing or commissioning office art compares them. On a tight budget, start with one original in the meeting space, framed and lit properly.

On price, in most cases you can buy art through a private curator for less than at a large auction or through a gallery. At auction, many bidders compete for the same work and push the price up; a gallery prices with big margins to cover its venue, its inventory and its gallerists. I carry none of those costs, so in many cases buying through me is more affordable than almost anywhere else, and the price includes private consultation for your office and my work with you until the art is on the wall. I represent you, not a roster of artists, so I can reach out to any artist in the world. More on what working with an art advisor costs.

My own installation team hangs the works, after hours if needed, and I can provide a certificate of insurance naming your landlord or managing agent: details on my page on art for wealth management offices.

I am based in Tenafly, New Jersey, and I choose art for advisory offices across Bergen County, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere. If you are opening, moving or refreshing an office, send me one photo of the space where you meet clients through the contact page.

Questions

Questions people ask

What are the current office decor trends?

The current office decor trends worth following are the ones that will last: fewer and larger original works, natural texture and landscape, and art by living artists, including artists from the firm's own region. Among collectors, the Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025 found participation in buying directly from artists had more than doubled since the previous survey. My test: will you still want to sit across from it in ten years? Word art, statement walls and art matched to this year's finishes usually fail it.

How should a financial advisor decorate their office?

A financial advisor should decorate the office so it feels calm, settled and personal, never showy. Put one strong, well framed original in the meeting space, one anchor work in reception at eye level, and the most personal piece in your own office. Leave out bulls, bears, tickers, slogans and anything that reads as a display of wealth. Light the work, choose glazing that does not reflect the windows, and keep the rest of the walls quiet.

Should a financial advisor display art they own?

Yes, a financial advisor can display art they own, usually in their own office, where a personal work tells clients something true about them. Choose a work you can talk about for its story rather than its value, and do not hang a famous name as a trophy in the meeting space. Check that your insurance covers the work at the office, keep works on paper out of direct sun, and hang anything heavy on two hooks, into studs wherever the wall allows.

Send me one photo of the wall, and a line about the space. I will tell you what I see.
