What does a Westchester house ask of art?
Scale and light, more than a city apartment does. Five places decide most of it:
- The double height entry. Seen from the door and again from the landing, the work has to hold at both distances. Hang it for the person in the entry, not centered in the full height, and choose one tall work, or a group that climbs as one.
- The stair hall. Seen on the move, from below and then from above: the centerline follows the pitch of the stair, and the landing is where a work is seen standing still. See entryway and hallway art.
- Spaces that open to the garden. Glass brings daylight and takes wall away. Keep works on paper and photographs off the walls the sun reaches.
- The long wall. Choose one work at real scale or a group that reads as one, then pin paper cut to size on the wall and judge it from the far end. See large wall art ideas.
- Many walls at once. I define the main wall from the sightlines; the rest of the house follows in order, not in one season.
What art suits an older Westchester house?
Art sized to the house's proportions rather than matched to its period. Many houses in Scarsdale, Bronxville and Rye are older, with plaster walls, moldings and paneled libraries, and contemporary work can look strongest against that detail.
- Size the work to the panel between the moldings, or to the space above the mantel, not to the whole wall.
- Plaster is more brittle than drywall: hang heavy work on the studs, on hangers made for plaster, or from a picture rail if the house has one.
- In a Tudor revival house, common in Scarsdale, leaded windows and dark paneling often keep the light low: plan picture lights before you hang, and keep works on paper away from working fireplaces and radiators.
New builds and renovations: while the drawings are open
Plan the art before the glass is drawn: every new window takes a wall. I can start from your architect's plans and define the main wall from the sightlines; that is the wall to keep solid. In Scarsdale and Rye, new windows go before the local Board of Architectural Review, which can change them: confirm the art for the walls they touch once the elevations are approved. Big walls and commissions
When a double height entry or a long stair wall needs a work in a size the market does not have, commission it. For a sea view villa in Caesarea, Israel, I commissioned a 3.5 meter triptych from an Italian artist, three storks at its center. With the Manhattan galleries a Metro-North ride away, two Westchester museums are worth an afternoon first: the Katonah Museum of Art, which shows changing exhibitions rather than a permanent collection, and the Neuberger Museum of Art on the SUNY Purchase campus, which draws on its own collection. What it costs
Budget a big house wall by wall, and give most of it to the first wall: the best original you can there, editions and prints for the rest.
