How I would approach itאיך הייתי ניגשת לזה

A quiet, serious painting says something about a firm. What matters is that the choice is deliberate.

I would start with one question: what should a client understand about the firm in the ten seconds before anyone speaks? The answer becomes a concept, a shortlist per room and a budget plan the firm approves. Reception takes the anchor work, the one that sets the tone. The conference room takes something that rewards a long look, because people spend an hour there. Partners' offices take the most personal pieces. For a firm I lean toward weight and restraint: original paintings, photography or works on paper, well framed, fewer and better. The committee sees a shortlist, not a flood, with a reason for each work, and nothing is bought without its approval.

Then the part the firm should not have to think about. I source through galleries and artists I work with directly, assess market value and negotiate on the firm's behalf, and bring in the printmakers and framers who work to my brief; my own installation team hangs the works. I work alongside your architect, not around them, and schedule the works against the move so they arrive when the walls are ready. Delivery is coordinated with the building's management office before anything arrives. The firm has one point of contact and one approved budget. More on art for an office or a business, and on the process, step by step.

A firm's move

Art for a law firm move, step by step

I am Stav Theodor, art curator and advisor, founder of THEODORA in Tenafly, New Jersey. I choose, source, frame and install art for law firms in New York and New Jersey.

Most law firms think about art once in a decade, when the lease is signed and the drawings for a new floor exist. That is the right moment to bring me in. My process has seven steps, and for a firm they follow the move itself.

1. Discovery: the firm and the floor

I start with a conversation with the partner who leads the move, and with the drawings. What should a client understand about the firm in the ten seconds before anyone speaks? Which walls does a visitor see from the door, from the reception desk, from the chairs in the conference room? I walk the space, or read the plans, with that question in mind.

2. Research

Then I look for the works. I research across galleries in New York and Tel Aviv and among artists I work with directly, and I assess the market value of what I find, so the firm pays a fair price for every piece.

3. Curatorial development: one concept for the floor

What I find becomes one written concept for the whole floor. Reception takes the anchor work, sized for the wall and for the sightline from the door. The conference rooms take works that reward a long look, because meetings last an hour or more. Partners' offices take the most personal pieces. The corridors connect them, so the collection reads as one voice rather than a set of separate purchases.

4. Budget planning, agreed before anything is shown

A partner committee works best when the hard questions are settled first. Before I show a single work, the firm agrees on a budget and on the subjects that are off limits. After that, the committee chooses between a few works per wall, each with one reason, instead of debating taste.

5. Procurement and selection

The committee sees a short list, not a flood, and nothing is bought without its approval. I negotiate on the firm's behalf, and direct relationships with artists often bring the cost of the work itself down. Where the right work does not exist, I brief an artist and manage a commission for a specific wall, from first concept to final execution. For the walls that define the firm I would buy or commission; leasing can suit walls you want to change often. Before leasing an anchor work, compare the rent over the whole lease with the price of owning it.

6. Logistics: the move date and the building

I work alongside your architect, not around them, so the walls are sized and lit for the works they will carry. Expert framers work to my brief, and delivery is coordinated with the building's management office and its rules before anything arrives. Every stage is scheduled against the move date and held to the approved budget.

7. Installation

My own installation team hangs the works when the walls are ready, and not before, after hours if the building prefers. The firm has one point of contact from the first conversation until the last work is on the wall, and my work is not complete until the art is installed and the firm is satisfied.

Weight and restraint

For a firm I lean toward weight and restraint: original paintings, photography or works on paper, well framed, fewer and better. Clients should see a firm that chose its walls, not one that spent on them. Nothing that reads as lavish, and nothing a partner would have to defend in a client meeting.

What the firm has at the end

A reception that speaks before anyone does, meeting rooms that hold attention without competing with the table, and a collection the partners chose deliberately, with a reason for every work. More on art for an office or a business, and on how the advisory process works.

I bring more than 15 years in the art world, curatorial work in established museums, a gallery I managed in Tel Aviv, and an M.A. in art history.

I bring the same approach to art for investment firms and family offices, art for wealth management offices and art for medical and aesthetic practices. For private homes, see my pages for an art consultant in New Jersey and an art advisor in New York.

I have spent more than 15 years in the art world: museums, galleries, academia, and years of work alongside leaders in international hospitality, building art concepts and collections for projects from hotels to private homes. THEODORA exists to help people find artworks that resonate on a personal level, and to create spaces that feel meaningful, distinctive, and alive.

Before THEODORA I did curatorial work in established museums, managed a gallery in Tel Aviv, and worked closely with emerging and established artists. Recent projects include private residences in Caesarea, Tel Aviv, and Herzliya, large-scale hospitality commissions, and the exhibition Creating Hope. Creating Hope.

Is there an art curator who works with law firms in New York and New Jersey?

Yes. I am Stav Theodor, art curator and advisor, founder of THEODORA in Tenafly, New Jersey, and I choose, source, frame and install art for law firms in New York and New Jersey. I start with one anchor work for reception, then the rooms where decisions are made. The partners approve the concept, the short list and the budget before anything is bought. I bring more than 15 years in the art world, museum curatorial work and an M.A. in art history.

What kind of art suits a law firm's reception?

One anchor work, sized to hold the wall from the door, rather than several small pieces. For a law firm I choose weight and restraint: an original painting, photography or a work on paper, well framed, in a palette that reads as steady and serious. It should say something true about the people behind the desk. A commissioned work is often the best answer for a reception, because it is made for that wall and cannot be seen anywhere else.

How do you work with a partner committee?

I bring the committee a concept first, then a short list for each room with the reason for every work, so the discussion is about a few real options rather than a flood. If some subjects are off limits for the firm, tell me at the start and they stay off the list. The committee approves the direction, the budget and the works, and nothing is bought without that approval. I manage everything in between.

On a long lease, should we buy, commission or lease the art?

For the walls that define the firm, I would buy or commission: reception and the rooms where decisions are made will carry those works for years, and a commissioned work is made for your wall and cannot be seen anywhere else. Leasing can suit walls you want to change often. Before leasing an anchor work, compare the rent over the whole lease with the price of owning it. The mix is set with you at the budget planning step, before anything is sourced.

How do you work with our architect and our move date?

Alongside the architect, not around them. I read the drawings, the finishes and the lighting plan before I propose anything, and I join early when I can, so walls can be sized and lit for the works. Sourcing, commissioned works, framing and installation are scheduled against the move, so the works arrive when the walls are ready. I set the timeline with you at the budget planning step, and delivery is coordinated with the building's management office before anything arrives.

Who installs, and can you work after hours with our building's rules?

My own installation team hangs the works, and I carry insurance. When the building asks for a certificate of insurance, I provide one, naming the landlord or managing agent on request. Installation can happen after hours, so reception and the conference rooms are finished without disturbing the firm's working day, and delivery is scheduled with the building's management office and its rules before anything arrives.

What does an art advisor cost?

Across the industry, advisors charge by the hour, a flat fee per project, a percentage of acquisitions, typically in the ten to twenty percent range, or a retainer for ongoing collection work. Those are industry norms, not my price list. I do not publish a rate. I quote each project after a first conversation, based on its scope, and direct relationships with artists often bring the total cost of the work itself down.
