Closter, New Jersey. The dining room, three works hung as one gesture.קלוסטר, ניו ג'רזי. פינת האוכל, שלוש עבודות שנתלו כמחווה אחת.
For a newly built private residence in Closter, New Jersey, I was commissioned to curate a collection that gives the architecture more character and the interior design more depth. I worked closely with leading New York City galleries, and the collection brings works by Jewish and Israeli artists together with other contemporary voices.לבית מגורים פרטי שזה עתה נבנה בקלוסטר, ניו ג'רזי, הוזמנתי לאצור אוסף שייתן לאדריכלות יותר אופי ולעיצוב הפנים יותר עומק. עבדתי בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם גלריות מובילות בניו יורק, והאוסף מפגיש עבודות של אמנים יהודים וישראלים עם קולות עכשוויים אחרים.
הבית היה מוכן כשנכנסתי: קירות לבנים, רצפת אלון בלוחות רחבים, תקרה עם קורות, דלתות זכוכית במסגרת שחורה שנפתחות אל העצים והשלג. כל גימור הוחלט וכל גימור היה נכון. מה שעוד לא היה לו זו עמדה, וזה הדבר האחד שאי אפשר להזמין מקבלן.
בית חדש הוא קוהרנטי מעצם התכנון, וקוהרנטיות יכולה להיקרא כשקטה, אפילו אנונימית, עד שהאמנות נותנת לחדרים מישהו להשתייך אליו. הבריף היה להוסיף עומק לעיצוב הפנים ולהעצים את האופי האדריכלי של הבית, לא לקשט אותו. האוסף היה אמור לכלול עבודות של אמנים יהודים וישראלים לצד קולות עכשוויים אחרים, והשניים היו צריכים להיקרא כאוסף אחד עם רגישות אחת, אף פעם לא כקטגוריה והיוצאים מן הכלל שלה.
בניתי את האוסף עם גלריות מובילות בניו יורק, ותכננתי את הבית כולו לפני הרכישה הראשונה. בפינת האוכל, שלושה ציורים קטנים בכחולים, ורודים וסגולים תלויים בשורה מעל שולחן האלון, קרובים בקנה מידה ובפלטה, כך שהקיר נקרא כמחווה אחת מתחת לשני גופי התאורה השחורים. בחדר העבודה, קנבס גדול אחד בירוקים וצהובים נושא את החדר לבדו, מול שולחן הכתיבה. במבואה, עבודה ממוסגרת גדולה בזהב וסגול יושבת מעל ספסל ובונסאי למרגלות המדרגות, במקום שכולם עוברים בו כמה פעמים ביום. כל עבודה נבחרה לקיר שלה, וכל קיר לפי מה שהוא יכול להחזיק.
התוצאה הופכת בית מעוצב היטב לחלל עם נשמה, שבו האמנות והאדריכלות מדברות באותה שפה.
צפיות ורשימות מצומצמות עם הגלריות, משא ומתן, שילוח. מסגור היכן שעבודה נזקקה לו, ואז התקנה, כשכל יצירה נתלית בגובה ובמרווח שהחדר שלה ביקש. את זה אני מנהלת מקצה לקצה בכל פרויקט, מהתוכנית הראשונה ועד הוו האחרון, ואני מחשיבה אותו גמור רק כשהלקוחות עוברים בבית והוא מרגיש שלהם.

The house was complete when I came in: white walls, wide plank oak floors, a beamed ceiling, black framed glass doors opening onto trees and snow. Every finish had been decided and every finish was right. What it did not yet have was a point of view, and that is the one thing you cannot order from a builder.
A new build is coherent by design, and coherence can read as quiet, even anonymous, until art gives the rooms someone to belong to. The brief was to bring depth to the interior design and raise the architectural character of the house, not to decorate it. The collection was to include works by Jewish and Israeli artists alongside other contemporary voices, and the two had to read as one collection with one sensibility, never as a category and its exceptions.
I built the collection with leading New York City galleries, planning the whole house before the first purchase. In the dining room, three small paintings in blues, pinks and violets hang in a row above the oak table, close in scale and palette, so the wall reads as one gesture under the two black pendants. In the office, a single large canvas in greens and yellows carries the room by itself, opposite the desk. In the hall, a large framed work in gold and violet sits above a bench and a bonsai at the foot of the stair, where everyone passes it several times a day. Each work was chosen for its wall, and each wall for what it could hold.
The result transforms a well designed house into a space with soul, where art and architecture speak the same language.
Viewings and shortlists with the galleries, negotiation, shipping. Framing where a work needed it, then installation, with every piece hung at the height and spacing its room asked for. I handle this end to end on every project, from the first plan to the last hook, and I consider it finished only when the clients walk through and the house feels like theirs.
