Law office decor ideas: art that makes a firm look serious, from reception to partner offices

Law office decor is the art and finish that tell a client, within the first minute, that a firm is established, calm and discreet. The art carries most of that message: one anchor work at reception, works that reward a long look where meetings run long, the most personal pieces in partners' offices, and no gavels or stock prints anywhere. Below, space by space, are the sizes that work, what to avoid, whether to buy, commission or lease, and how to time it all with a move.

A client cannot judge your legal work from reception. They can judge your walls.

What law office decor has to do: trust, calm, discretion

Law office decor has three jobs: trust, calm and discretion. Trust: a client should see a firm that chose its walls. Calm: clients who arrive worried and stay for long meetings need work that holds a look without agitating anyone. Discretion: nothing should read as a comment on a client's matter or as a display of spending. So for a firm I work with weight and restraint: fewer and better works, original paintings, photography or works on paper, each well framed.

What art should a law firm put in reception?

A law firm's reception should carry one strong work that a client can read from the door, not a scatter of small frames. Every client sees it, often while waiting, so it gets the best light on the floor. Like entryway art in a home, it has seconds to make its point.

On a bare wall facing the door, size the work to the wall, leave at least 12 inches of clear wall on each side, and hang its center 57 to 60 inches from the floor for a standing visitor. Above a row of chairs, the chairs set the height: the work spans about two thirds of the row, 8 to 10 inches above their backs, in acrylic or unglazed, because heads lean back. See my guides to large wall art ideas and how high to hang art.

Figure 2Bare wall: center height. Above chairs: the gap.

A commission often suits reception best: it is made for that wall and seen nowhere else. More in art for an office or a business.

Conference and meeting spaces: art for long meetings

A conference room needs a work that rewards a long look, because meetings last an hour or more. When the end wall holds a screen, the art goes on a long wall: one large work or a pair. Opposite skyline windows, plain glass mirrors the view, so use anti-reflective glazing or an unglazed painting. The 57 to 60 inch line assumes people standing; no published standard exists for seated spaces, so check the height from a seat at the table.

Plan and side section of a conference room: the screen on the end wall, windows along one long wall and one large work on the opposite long wall, seen by the people seated facing it; in the section, the standing line at 57 to 60 inches and a seated viewer's sightline passing just over the heads of the near row
Figure 3Art on a long wall, checked from a seat.

Partner and associate offices

A partner's office takes the most personal work on the floor, one that says something true about the partner. A print shop asks what size fits the wall; I ask who faces it. Behind the desk, the client sees it across the table; facing the desk, the partner sees it all day.

Plan of a partner's office: a work on the wall behind the desk, seen by the client across the desk, and a work on the wall facing the desk, seen by the partner from the desk chair
Figure 4Behind the desk, the client's view; facing it, the partner's.

Sightlines also shaped a home office I worked on in Caesarea, built around the client's two loves, horses and music: above the desk, seen all day, an existing painting of horses I acquired; in the seating corner, a musician at the piano I commissioned from the same artist (the Caesarea home office project).

In associate offices, the partners decide. Before I choose anything, I ask them how they want the firm to feel and what position it should project to clients; then I make sure every associate office reads strong and gives a client confidence.

Corridors and the library wall

Corridors connect the floor, so a series works best: editioned photographs or works on paper, framed alike, on one centerline with even gaps, so the eye travels instead of stopping at each frame. How many works a floor needs has no fixed answer; it is usually fewer than a firm expects: count the walls clients and staff face, and leave the rest bare.

Two elevations of a corridor wall: a series of five works framed alike, their centers on one line within 57 to 60 inches, with equal gaps; and, to avoid, three unrelated frames at different heights
Figure 5Framed alike, one centerline, equal gaps.

A library wall is already full of pattern, so its art should be simple in shape, at the end of a run of shelves. Works on paper and photographs fade in direct sun, and the damage cannot be undone, so the Northeast Document Conservation Center advises keeping them out of direct sun and behind UV filtering glazing.

Side section of an office with a window: high sun lands on the floor near the window, while low sun reaches across the space onto the facing wall, over most of a framed work hung at eye level
Figure 6Low sun reaches the art on the facing wall.

What should a law office avoid on its walls?

A law office should avoid gavels, scales of justice and stock prints.

Should a law firm buy, commission or lease art?

A law firm should buy or commission the works that define it, because reception and the rooms where decisions are made carry them for years, and lease only the walls it wants to change often. Before leasing an anchor work, compare the rent over the whole lease with the price of owning it. How I choose the works that define a firm is on my page for art for law firms.

On price: in most cases, a firm buys art for less through a private curator than at a large auction, where bidders push the price up, or through a gallery, whose prices carry the cost of its venue, its inventory and its gallerists. I carry none of those costs, so in many cases buying through me is more affordable, and the price includes a private consultation for your floor and my work with you until the art is on the wall. A gallery represents its artists; I represent the firm, with no closed roster, so I can reach out to any artist in the world. More on what working with an art advisor costs.

Timing the art with a move date

Bring the art into the plan when the lease is signed and the drawings exist, not after the move.

  1. The drawings. I work alongside your architect, so the walls for the anchor works are sized and lit for them.
  2. Commissions. A commission follows the artist's schedule, so it starts first.
  3. The building. Delivery is coordinated with the management office. My own installation team hangs the works, after hours if the building prefers, and I can provide a certificate of insurance naming the landlord or managing agent on request. More on framing and installing large scale art.

I bring more than 15 years in the art world, since 2010. I am based in Tenafly, in Bergen County, New Jersey, and work with law firms across New Jersey, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere. If your firm has a move date, start with how I work with law firms, and send me the floor plan, photos of the walls clients see first, and the date.

Questions

Questions people ask

What is the best decor for a law office?

The best decor for a law office is a small number of strong original works, placed where clients look: one anchor work at reception, a work that rewards a long look in each conference room, and personal pieces in partners' offices. Weight and restraint read as a firm that chose its walls. Gavels, scales and catalog prints read as filler. Frame the works well and light them, because a good work badly lit disappears.

How do I decorate my law office?

Decorate a law office in the order clients see it: reception first, then the conference rooms, then partners' offices, and corridors last, where a series ties the floor together. Agree the budget and the off-limits subjects with the partners before looking at any work, then choose between a few works per wall. Size each work to its wall and to the distance it is seen from, and plan everything, commissions first, against the move date.

What art should a lawyer have in their own office?

A lawyer's own office should hold the most personal art on the floor: a work connected to something the lawyer loves, a place they come from, or a subject they know deeply. Decide first who the work is for. A work behind the desk faces the client across the table; a work facing the desk is the one the lawyer sees all day. One or two strong works are enough for a private office.

Is legal themed art a good idea for a law office?

Legal themed art is rarely a good idea for a law office. Gavels, scales of justice and Lady Justice prints tell a client what they already know, and they make one firm look like every other. If the firm wants a link to its work, make it specific: a historical map or print of the city where the firm practices, or a work tied to the firm's own history, properly framed. Specific reads as chosen; symbolic reads as stock.

What colors work best in a law office?

The colors that work best in a law office are grounded ones. Deep greens and blues, warm neutrals and wood tones read as steady. A palette alone will not win a client's trust, so choose it from the building, the finishes and the light. Then let the art carry the strongest color on the floor, at reception, where one confident work gives the space a focus instead of color scattered across every wall.

Send me one photo of the wall, and a line about the space. I will tell you what I see.
