Art curator
I am an art curator in New York for private apartments, offices and collections. As an art curator and advisor I read the rooms, the light and the building, work inside your designer's plan rather than around it, and find, negotiate and install the art, from a first conversation to the day it is hung. I am based in Tenafly, New Jersey, a short drive from Manhattan, and this page says what the work looks like in practice.

When someone in New York looks for an art curator, they usually have an apartment they care about, a designer they trust, walls that are still empty, and no interest in spending their weekends walking galleries. That is the job I do. I take the search off your hands, I bring back only what fits, and I stay until the last piece is on the wall. I trained as a curator, I have done curatorial work in museums and managed a gallery in Tel Aviv, and I have built art collections with luxury hospitality groups, from the Waldorf Astoria Chengdu to the St. Regis Amman. An apartment is smaller than a hotel. The standard is not.
I start in the rooms, not in a catalog. A Tribeca loft with tall walls and cast iron columns asks for a different scale than a prewar Upper East Side apartment with plaster moldings and rooms that were drawn with pictures in mind. A glass tower in Hudson Yards has very little solid wall and a great deal of light, so the question becomes where the eye rests and what can hold its own next to the view. Three things I check first:
Then the four services, in the order they happen: consulting and curation, from a single artwork to a complete collection; sourcing and acquisition, through a global network of artists and makers and the galleries of New York and Tel Aviv, with market value assessed and the price negotiated on your behalf; commissions and creative direction, when the wall needs a piece that does not exist yet; and production, framing and installation, with printmakers, framers and installers I work with regularly. The work is not complete until every piece is on the wall and you are fully satisfied. The process, step by step, is on what an art advisor does for a Manhattan apartment.
The client loved to entertain, and the apartment had a custom bar built for exactly that: a marble counter, backlit shelves of bottles and glassware on either side, and in the middle a panel that was clearly built to hold a single picture. I selected a large format digital collage that draws on the visual language of glamorous social gatherings and references Un Bar aux Folies-Bergère, painted by Édouard Manet in 1882: the barmaid behind her marble counter, and the crowd that appears only in the mirror behind her. A work that quotes Manet above a private bar gives the room a lineage. Guests feel the reference before they place it, and the client has a work that says, in one glance, what the apartment is for. Then the practical part: production at the size the panel required, framing, and installation above a bar, where lit shelves and marble put reflections everywhere and the hanging height is set for people standing, not sitting. The photographs are on the project page.

Consulting runs from a single artwork to a complete collection, and in an apartment that starts with what is already there. Some pieces will find a better wall, some will want reframing, and some will tell me what the new works should not be. Looking at your existing art is also the fastest way for me to understand your taste before I propose anything. As for time: a single available work can be selected, framed and installed on a short timeline; a commission follows the artist's schedule and the production time for the piece; a whole apartment moves with the design and construction timeline, which is why I prefer to start while the plans are still open. I set the timeline with you at the discovery stage and keep to it.
An office, a clinic or a firm asks a different question than a home: what should a client understand about you in the ten seconds before you speak? One work that says it honestly and holds the wall from the door does more than a corridor of safe prints. I choose art for workspaces the way I choose it for hotels, with the identity of the place first and the wall second, and I manage production and installation around your working hours. More on art for an office, a clinic or a business.
I work alongside architects and interior designers, not around them. If your designer is already on the project, I read their drawings, their palette and their furniture plan before I propose a single work. Art that ignores the design reads as an afterthought; art that only matches it reads as decoration. The right piece belongs to the room and still says something the room could not say on its own. I join early when I can, while lighting and wall finishes are still open, so that a picture light lands where the picture will be; if the apartment is already finished, I work with what is there. A good share of my projects come to me through designers and architects on behalf of their clients, and there is a page written for them: for interior designers and architects.
Sourcing in New York means knowing what is on the walls this month, not last year, and that is a large part of why I publish Art Radar, a weekly curator's guide to the exhibitions worth your time in New York, New Jersey and Tel Aviv. Recent routes include two galleries and lunch in SoHo, José Lerma at Nino Mier and Rita Ackermann at Hauser and Wirth; a September gallery walk in Tribeca, four shows a few minutes apart; and In a Free State at Luhring Augustine, also in Tribeca, with a curator's note on what the show leaves outside the frame. The galleries of Chelsea, the museums on Fifth Avenue and the auction rooms are on the same radar, so when a work for your wall is hanging in one of them, there is a good chance I have already stood in front of it.
I am based in Tenafly, New Jersey, a short drive from Manhattan, and I serve New York City, New Jersey and Tel Aviv. For a house in Bergen County, read about my work as an art curator in New Jersey. For a home in Israel that you manage from here, I work in Hebrew and English on both sides; that page is art for a home in Israel, managed from New York or New Jersey.
Industry norms in art advisory are an hourly rate, a flat project fee, or a percentage of what you acquire, typically in the ten to twenty percent range, with a retainer for ongoing collection work. I do not publish a rate. I quote each project after a first conversation, based on scope, and because much of the work comes through direct relationships with artists, the cost of the works themselves often comes down. The longer answer is on what an art advisor costs.
Send me one photo of the wall and a line about the room, at stav@stavtheodor.com or through the contact details at the end of this page. If the apartment is still being designed, send the plans; if it is finished, the photo is enough. I will tell you what I see, and we will talk about scope before I say a number.

All of New York City, and Bergen County and the rest of New Jersey on the other side of the river, with Tel Aviv beyond that. Usually yes, and your designer will often be the one to suggest it. Designers are responsible for the whole room and rarely have the time or the artist relationships to source art seriously. I work inside their plan, present a shortlist that respects their palette and furniture, and handle sourcing, negotiation, framing and installation. Yes. Production, framing and installation are part of the service, with printmakers, framers and installers I work with regularly. In Manhattan that includes the building: certificates of insurance, service elevator bookings and working hours, coordinated with your management office before anything is delivered.
