Most people who ask this are not looking for a shop. They want a person with a trained eye who will listen, look at the home and take the decisions off their plate. That person is an independent art advisor, sometimes called a private art curator. Below is what that person does, how to tell the options apart, and how the first steps work with me.
What does an art advisor do for a New York home?
An art advisor decides with you what to buy, finds it across the whole market, negotiates on your side and manages everything until it hangs. I have spent more than 15 years in the art world: curatorial work in museums, managing a gallery in Tel Aviv earlier in my career, and working closely with emerging and established artists. That is the background I bring to a New York apartment or townhouse.
- I listen first. Who comes over, where you sit in the evening, what you already own and what you never want to see again.
- I read the space. The light and how it moves, the sightlines from the door and the sofa, and the building's rules. From the sightlines I define the main wall, which is rarely the biggest one. I can work in person or from your designer's plans.
- I bring a short selection, not a catalog. A few works chosen for your walls, with the reasoning behind each.
- I handle the rest. Negotiation, framing with expert framers, delivery and installation with my own insured team.
Who else could I call, and what is the difference?
Several people can put art on your walls, and each is an honest choice. A gallery's advisory service shows you its own artists, which is its job. An online platform suggests works from its inventory. A decorator or designer shapes the whole room and may place art as part of it. An installer hangs what you already own. The question that separates them is whom they represent.
I represent the client. I have no closed roster and I am not obligated to any set of artists, so I can reach out to any gallery, auction house or artist in the world. When there is a designer on the project, I work alongside them, not around them: the designer keeps the room, I bring the art.
What does it cost to work with an advisor?
In most cases, buying through a private curator costs less than buying at a large auction or through a gallery. At auction, many bidders push the price up. A gallery carries the venue, the inventory and its staff, and prices with big margins to cover them. I have none of those costs. How long does it take?
It depends on the scope. One anchor work for a living room moves faster than a whole apartment, and a commission follows the artist's timeline, which I fix with the artist at the start.
