Start with one wall and one feeling, not a shopping list, and buy the work you keep returning to. More than 15 years in the art world, from museums to a gallery I managed in Tel Aviv, taught me that the order of decisions matters more than any single choice.

Decide the feeling before you look at a single work. Calm, energy, warmth, memory: name one for each space. That one word rules out most of the market. A bedroom that should feel quiet is not helped by the loudest painting you own; a dining room where you host can take a work that starts conversations.
Will you still like it in ten years? The work you keep returning to, on different days, usually outlasts the one that impressed you once.
Which wall should you start with?
Start with the wall the space already turns toward: the wall behind the sofa, the one you face from the front door, the long wall of the dining room. Give it the strongest work you can find, and let the other walls support it. One wall done well changes a space more than five done halfway.

Size: the rules that prevent most mistakes
Of every rule for how to choose wall art, size prevents the most mistakes. Buy bigger than feels safe: too small is the size mistake design guides name most often.

Width. Above furniture, the work spans about two thirds of the furniture's width; design guides range from half to three quarters. On a bare wall, size it to the wall and to where you first see it from.
Height. Design guides put the center anywhere from 55 to 66 inches; most land at 57 to 60. Where people sit, it comes down; see dining room art and how to hang pictures.
Test before you buy. Tape the work's outline on the wall and live with it for a day. Paper on the wall shows what a screen hides.

Is one large work better than several small ones? On a main wall, usually yes: one work reads as a decision, scattered small pieces as clutter. A group works when it is composed as one piece, as in gallery wall ideas.

Color and the space around the work
Art should relate to the space, not match it: art matched to the cushions dates with them. Take one color the space already has, or its temperature, warm or cool, and let the work answer it. Gallerists on a 2026 Artsy panel put it plainly: never match art to your soft furnishings. A work can also bring the color a space lacks. In a renovated Bauhaus home in Tel Aviv, the artwork became the focal point, bringing color and texture into a monochromatic space.
Keep works on paper and color photographs out of direct sun: the Northeast Document Conservation Center notes that light damage is cumulative and irreversible. UV filtering glazing adds protection; it does not replace shade. Glass or gloss facing a window can turn into a mirror. In a Tel Aviv Bauhaus residence, the central work is printed on glossy anti reflective acrylic: the depth of gloss without the mirror.

Old and new art mix well when the pieces share one thing, a palette or a subject.
Originals, editions and prints
Put the best original you can on the first wall, the one you see most, and let editions and prints carry the rest. Knowing how to buy art for your home starts with knowing what each one is. An original is one of a kind. A limited edition is a print or photograph made in a stated number, signed and numbered, ideally with a certificate. An open edition print has no limit.
Set the budget per wall, not per piece, and give most of it to the first wall: one strong original does more than many middling pieces. Count the whole cost on the wall: the work, framing, delivery and installation.
Where you buy changes what the budget buys. With a private curator you can, in most cases, buy art for less than at a large auction or through a gallery. At auction, many bidders compete for the same work, which pushes the price up. A gallery prices its works to cover its space, its inventory and its staff. I carry none of those costs, so in many cases buying through me is more affordable than almost anywhere else. More in what an art advisor costs.
When does a curator save time and money?
A curator, or residential art consultant, saves the most when the stakes are high: a new house with many empty walls, a double height wall, or a collection you want to hold together. The private consultation for your home is included in the price of the work, and I work with you until the art is on the wall; I have my own installation team. A gallery's job is to represent its artists and get them the highest price. I represent you. I have no closed roster and no obligation to any artist, so I can reach out to any artist in the world.

Pick wall art for a room by starting with its main wall and the feeling you want there. Measure the wall and the furniture below it, and look for a work about two thirds of the furniture's width. Relate the art to one color or to the temperature of the room rather than to its fabrics. No, art should not match the room's fabrics or paint. Art chosen to match the cushions reads as part of the upholstery and dates with it. Art should relate to the room instead: share one of its colors, answer its temperature, such as a warm painting in a cool white room, or bring the one color the room lacks.
