How much does it cost to commission a painting?

It depends on the artist, the scale and the technique, and there is no honest general number. What I can tell you is how it is handled: the price is agreed with the artist at the concept stage, before any work begins, and the whole commission is then managed within that approved budget. When the commission is made directly with the artist, as much of my work is, there is no gallery margin in between, and that often brings the total cost of the work down.

How long does a commissioned artwork take?

It depends on the artist's technique and calendar, the scale of the work, whether it needs special production, and how far it has to travel, so I do not quote durations on a page. What I do is set the timeline with the artist before the commission starts, agree the points at which you see progress, and on a new home plan the commission alongside the construction schedule so the work is ready when the house is.

Can I see the work before it is finished?

Yes. The points at which you see the work in progress are agreed with the artist at the concept stage, together with the dimensions, materials, price and delivery. You see the concept and usually sketches or studies before anything begins, and then progress at the agreed moments. Small adjustments are made there, where they are still easy, so the finished work is never a surprise.

What if I do not like the finished commission?

The process is built so that this question is answered long before the end. You choose the artist from examples of their work, approve the concept and sketches, and see the work at agreed points while it is being made. Each of those moments is a place to adjust or to stop. By the time the work is finished, you have already seen and approved the idea, the direction and the progress. What remains is the pleasure of seeing it on the wall.

Should I commission art before the house is finished?

Yes, if you can. With the plans in hand I can choose the wall for the work before the lighting is placed, coordinate hanging points and the route into the house with the architect and the contractor while the walls are still open, and run the commission alongside the construction schedule. A work planned with the house arrives as part of it. A work bought afterwards has to fit whatever is left.

How do I commission an artwork made for my new home?

You commission a work for a new home by briefing an artist who is right for the space, agreeing the concept, size, budget and timeline up front, and then approving the work at each stage until it is installed. How long it takes depends on the artist, the scale and the technique, so I fix the timeline with the artist at the start rather than guess it here.

השלבים

הבריף. קודם היכרות: החדר, התוכניות אם הבית לא גמור, האור, איך אתם חיים, והדבר שאתם רוצים שהיצירה תישא בתוכה. בווילה עם נוף לים בקיסריה, בעל הבית הגיע לישראל כעולה חדש. העובדה הזאת הפכה לבריף.
האמן. אני מציעה אמנים מהרשת שלי שהשפה שלהם מתאימה לבריף, עם דוגמאות מיצירות קיימות שלהם והסיבה שלי לכל שם. אתם בוחרים את האמן.
קונספט והסכם. האמן מגיב לבריף בקונספט, בדרך כלל עם סקיצות או עבודות הכנה. אנחנו קובעים את המידות, החומרים, המחיר, המסירה, והנקודות שבהן תראו את היצירה בתהליך. הכול מסוכם לפני משיכת המכחול הראשונה, ומנוהל בתוך התקציב המאושר ולוח הזמנים המוגדר.
היצירה. האמן עובד. אני נשארת קרובה, אתם רואים התקדמות בנקודות שסוכמו, ותיקונים קטנים קורים כאן, כשהם עדיין קלים.
הפקה, מסגור ומשלוח. לטריפטיך או לקנבס גדול, השלב הזה דורש תכנון: אריזה, הובלה, הדרך אל תוך הבית, מבנה הקיר. בבנייה חדשה, אני מתאמת את זה עם האדריכל והקבלן בזמן שהקירות עדיין פתוחים.
התקנה. מתקינים מקצועיים, בליווי שלי עד הסוף. העבודה לא מסתיימת עד שהיצירה תלויה ואתם מרוצים לגמרי.

שתי הזמנות, שני בריפים שונים מאוד

בווילה עם נוף לים בקיסריה, התוצאה היא טריפטיך ברוחב 3.5 מטר של אמן איטלקי. שלוש חסידות במרכזו מסמלות שיבה הביתה, כוח ושייכות, ומהדהדות את מסעו של בעל הבית כעולה חדש ואת הנדידה העונתית של החסידות דרך ישראל. אף אחד לא יכול היה לקנות את זה. זה היה צריך להיווצר.

כמה זמן זה לוקח?

A commission is the only purchase where, on the day you say yes, the work does not exist. That is its risk, and its whole point: nothing on the market was made for your wall, your light and your story. So the process matters more than the shopping, and here it is.

When a commission is the right answer

When the wall is unusual: very wide, very tall, a stairwell, a foyer that needs a pair. When the story is personal and nothing on the market says it. When you want a specific artist and their existing works are the wrong size or already gone. Artworks created with a specific space and identity in mind carry deeper meaning, greater value, and a presence that cannot be replicated. And when a commission is not the answer: if a work you love already exists and fits the wall, buy it. I will say so.

The stages

The brief. Discovery first: the room, the plans if the house is not finished, the light, how you live, and the thing you want the work to hold. In a sea view villa in Caesarea, the homeowner had come to Israel as a new immigrant. That fact became the brief.
The artist. I propose artists from my network whose language fits the brief, with examples of their existing work and my reason for each name. You choose the hand.
Concept and agreement. The artist responds to the brief with a concept, usually with sketches or studies. We fix the dimensions, materials, price, delivery, and the points at which you see the work in progress. Everything is agreed before the first brushstroke, and managed within the approved budget and the defined timeline.
Making. The artist works. I stay close, you see progress at the agreed points, and small course corrections happen here, where they are still easy.
Production, framing and shipping. For a triptych or a large canvas, this stage needs planning: crating, transport, the route into the house, the structure of the wall. On a new build, I coordinate this with the architect and the contractor while the walls are still open.
Installation. Professional installers, managed by me to the end. The work is not complete until it hangs and you are fully satisfied.

Two commissions, two very different briefs

In the Caesarea sea view villa, the result is a 3.5 meter triptych by an Italian artist. Three storks at its center stand for homecoming, strength and belonging, echoing the homeowner's journey as a new immigrant and the seasonal migration of storks through Israel. Nobody could have bought this. It had to be made.

In a private residence in Tel Aviv, the brief came from a television series. The client loved the intimate imagery of Shtisel, so I commissioned the artist whose paintings appeared in the series. The work: a mother caressing her baby, rendered with quiet warmth. A modest subject, a precise match.

And in a home office in Caesarea, the two routes met. The client's two loves are horses and music, the artists live and work in the client's country of origin, and of the two works one existing painting was acquired and the second was specially commissioned from the same artist. Buying and commissioning are not opposites. They are two tools, and the brief decides which one to pick up.

How long does it take?

It depends, and I will not give you a number I cannot stand behind. What sets the timeline: the artist's technique and calendar, the scale of the work, whether it needs special production, and how far it has to travel. What I can promise is that the timeline is set with the artist before we start, that you will know the stages and when you will see progress, and that on a new home I plan the commission alongside the construction schedule so the work is ready when the house is. The earlier you bring me in, the more of the house can be designed around the work rather than the other way round.
