Dental office decor ideas: art for the waiting room, the chair and the corridor

Dental office decor is the art and finish a patient sees from the door to the chair, chosen with anxious patients in mind and to show the standard of care. Most practices forget the view a patient looks at longest, the ceiling and upper wall seen from the chair, so I plan that first. Below, space by space: what to hang, what to leave out and how it is cleaned.

Good dental office decor follows the patient through the visit: the front desk, the wall across from the waiting chairs, the corridor, then the ceiling and upper wall once the chair reclines. Most practices plan the walls a patient walks past and forget the one above the chair.

Plan of a dental practice with a patient's route from the door to the front desk, the waiting area, the corridor and a reclined chair in the operatory, with a sightline at each stop showing where the eye lands: the art behind the desk, the wall facing the waiting seats, the corridor sequence, and, from the chair, the ceiling and the upper wall ahead
Figure 1A patient's route through a practice, and where the eye lands at each stop. From the chair, it lands on the ceiling and the top of the wall ahead.

What does dental office decor have to do?

Dental office decor has two jobs: give a nervous patient something calm and readable to look at, and show the standard of care before anyone says a word. A patient cannot judge the dentistry on arrival, but they can see whether a space is kept, lit and considered.

Table 1What each space of a dental practice asks of its art

The waiting room: ideas for patients who arrive anxious

The waiting room needs calm images a patient can read at a glance. The dental office waiting room ideas I would start with:

2/3of the seating's width
8 to 10inbetween seat backs and frame (20 to 25 cm)
57 to 60incenter where people stand (145 to 152 cm)
Elevation of a waiting area wall: one artwork 56 inches wide, two thirds of the 84 inch bench below it, hung 10 inches above the seat backs, with acrylic glazing where heads lean
Figure 2One work, two thirds of the bench.
A dental waiting area: one wide painting of dense, colorful brushwork in violet, blue and green hangs above a row of three linked ivory seats with wood arms, about two thirds of their length.
Proposal · two thirds of the bench

There is no reliable published standard for seated eye height, so above seating I work from the furniture, not the floor. For standing heights, see how high to hang art.

Is there evidence behind calm imagery? Some, with limits. In a 2011 study on one psychiatric unit, Nanda and colleagues found less as-needed anxiety medication on days a realistic nature image hung than on days with abstract art or none: one unit, one image, not a dental practice. Cleveland Clinic's art program points the other way: its 2011 article says no convincing study shows one style of art serves patients better than another, and the Clinic buys challenging contemporary work on purpose. I read the two together: calm where people wait anxious, bolder where they pass by choice.

The operatory: what does the patient see from the chair?

From the chair, a patient sees the ceiling and the top of the wall ahead, sometimes for an hour, so that is where the art goes. Once the chair reclines, a painting on the side wall drops out of view. An operatory is planned standing in the doorway and lived in lying down.

Plan of a dental operatory: from the doorway the eye lands on a work on the side wall, while from the reclined chair the view reaches the wall ahead and the side wall falls outside it
Figure 3Planned from the door, lived in from the chair.

I would choose one calm work for the wall ahead, placed higher than the standing rule, where a reclined patient looks. Horizon, water and sky can be looked at for a long time; a portrait looking down at a patient cannot. If the only view is ceiling tiles, a lightweight printed or backlit panel in the ceiling grid can carry sky or leaves seen from below. Nothing heavy and no glass hangs over a patient's face.

Two side sections of a dental operatory: sitting back, the patient's line of sight meets a work on the upper part of the wall ahead, above the 57 to 60 inch standing band; fully reclined, the view reaches only the ceiling, where a light printed panel sits in the ceiling grid, clear of the operatory light
Figure 4Sitting back, the upper wall; reclined, the ceiling.

The front desk, the brand wall and the corridor

The front desk takes one strong work, sized to the wall and to the line of sight from the door, because it is the first thing a patient sees. Dental office artwork here can carry the practice's identity without the logo doing all the work: a palette drawn from the brand, or a subject tied to the neighborhood. Keep the logo smaller and to one side.

Two elevations of the wall behind a front desk: a large logo in the middle pushes two small artworks to the edges; one long work, two thirds of the desk's width, sits above the heads of standing staff, with the logo smaller and to one side
Figure 5Art centered, logo to one side.

Past the desk, the corridor can take bolder work, because patients walk it briefly and by choice: a sequence on one center line, 57 to 60 inches from the floor, reads as one walk. Diplomas and certificates get a wall of their own.

Pediatric and family practices

A pediatric practice needs art children can read from their own height. In the waiting area, a mural or large printed wall covering works better than framed art at child height: no glass, no corners, and it can be specified to wipe clean. Framed works go above reach. Choose subjects with things to find and count, such as animals or boats, rather than cartoon characters, which date quickly and, when licensed, need permission. A family practice can keep one pediatric corner and let the rest stay calm for adults.

Elevation of a pediatric waiting area wall: a washable mural across the lower wall at a child's eye level, and framed works hung above a child's reach, higher than the 57 to 60 inch standing band
Figure 6Mural at child height, frames above reach.

Cosmetic and premium practices

A cosmetic practice sells a result patients judge with their eyes, so its dental office wall art has to look chosen, not ordered from a catalog. Originals and commissions carry more weight here than decor prints. Keep smile photographs and before and after images in the consultation materials, not on the art walls: a gallery of teeth undoes the calm.

Cleaning, glazing and durability

Art in a dental practice is specified for cleaning before it is chosen, and your infection control guidance comes first.

More on hardware in framing and installing large scale art. My own installation team hangs the works, I carry insurance, and I install after clinic hours, so no patient sees a ladder in reception.

Working with your designer on art

Bring the art in while your designer is still drawing, not after the chairs arrive. The designer's plan, palette and lighting come first, and I work alongside designers and architects, not around them. Early matters: a picture light or a backlit ceiling panel needs power. More in working with your interior designer on art; how I plan a practice with your team is on my page for medical practices, and the same process covers art for an office or a business.

On budget: in most cases, buying art through me costs less than at a large auction or through a gallery. At auction, bidders push the price up; a gallery's price carries its venue, inventory and staff. I have none of those costs. The price includes a private consultation for your practice and my work with you until the art is on the wall, and I represent you, not a roster of artists, so I can reach out to any artist in the world. More on this in what an art advisor costs.

I am based in Tenafly and work with practices across Bergen County, northern New Jersey, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere, with more than 15 years in the art world. If you are opening, moving or refreshing a practice, start with art for medical practices.

Questions

Questions people ask

What are some good decorations for a dentist office?

Good decorations for a dentist office are calm, readable artworks placed where patients actually look: one strong work at the front desk, landscapes, water or quiet color in the waiting room, one calm work on the wall a reclined patient faces, and a sequence of works along the corridor. Choose fewer, larger pieces over many small prints. Leave out teeth, dental jokes and spa clichés, and specify every frame and surface to be wiped clean.

What should I put in my dental waiting room?

A dental waiting room works best with one large calm work, or a pair that reads as one, on the wall patients face from their seats: a landscape, water, light or soft color with enough detail to return to. Hang it 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) above the seat backs, about two thirds of the seating's width. Keep ambiguous or crowded images out, and put every work on paper behind glazing.

How do I decorate a pediatric dental office?

A pediatric dental office is best decorated at two heights: a washable mural or large printed wall covering at a child's eye level, and framed works above their reach. Pick subjects with things to find and count, such as animals, boats or a busy landscape, instead of licensed cartoon characters, which date quickly and need permission to use. Keep the treatment spaces calmer than the waiting area, and give parents one wall that is simply good art.

What art works on the ceiling above a dental chair?

The art that works on the ceiling above a dental chair is light, fixed and calm: a printed or backlit panel set into the ceiling grid, showing sky, leaves or water seen from below. A framed work under glass should never hang over a patient's face. Keep the panel clear of the operatory light and any equipment mounted overhead, and agree its surface and fixing with your designer and your infection control guidance.
