על מה אני מסתכלת קודם

בית חדש בקלוסטר

הבית בקלוסטר היה חדש לגמרי כשהובאתי לפרויקט: קירות לבנים, רצפת אלון רחבה, תקרה עם קורות, דלתות זכוכית במסגרת שחורה אל העצים. כל גימור היה נכון, ולבית עדיין לא הייתה עמדה. הוזמנתי לאצור אוסף שיחזק את האופי האדריכלי של הבית ויוסיף עומק לעיצוב הפנים. עבדתי בשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם גלריות מובילות בניו יורק, והאוסף מפגיש עבודות של אמנים יהודים וישראלים לצד קולות עכשוויים אחרים, תלויות כך שהן נקראות כאוסף אחד עם רגישות אחת. בחדר האוכל, שלושה ציורים קטנים בכחולים, ורודים וסגולים תלויים בשורה מעל שולחן האלון. בחדר העבודה, קנבס גדול אחד נושא את החדר לבדו. במבואה, עבודה ממוסגרת גדולה בזהב וסגול יושבת מעל ספסל למרגלות המדרגות, במקום שכולם עוברים בו כמה פעמים ביום.
התוצאה הופכת בית מעוצב היטב לחלל עם נשמה, שבו האמנות והאדריכלות מדברות באותה שפה.

An art curator does for a house what an architect does for the plot: decides what belongs where, and why, before anything is bought. In New Jersey that job is mine. I trained as a curator, I have done curatorial work in museums and managed a gallery in Tel Aviv, I have built art collections with luxury hospitality groups, and today I do the same work for private homes from my base in Tenafly. I take on a house at any of three moments: while it is being built, while it is being finished, or years later, when the walls still say nothing.
What an art curator does for a private home
Four things, in the order they happen.
Consulting and curation. From a single artwork to a complete collection: a concept for the house, a shortlist per room, and pieces that fit the space, the style and the story of the people in it. Deep research, market insight and a sharp eye, so the shortlist stays short.
Sourcing and acquisition. I find the work through a global network of artists and makers, galleries in New York and Tel Aviv, and artists I work with directly. I assess market value and negotiate on your behalf, and because so much comes through direct relationships with the makers, the cost of the work itself often comes down.
Commissions and creative direction. When the wall needs a piece that does not exist yet, I brief the artist and manage the work from the first concept to the final execution. A work made for a specific wall carries deeper meaning and a presence that cannot be repeated.
Production, framing and installation. Printmakers, framers and art installers I work with regularly, within defined timelines and an approved budget. The work is not complete until every piece is on the wall and you are fully satisfied.
Everything runs through the same seven steps: discovery, research, curatorial development, budget planning, art procurement and selection, logistics, installation. You see a shortlist, not a flood, and I handle every detail in between.
What I look at first
I start in the rooms, not in a catalog. Three things decide most of what follows. The light: where it comes from, how it moves through the day, and where glare will ruin a glossy surface, which settles medium, finish and glazing as much as placement. The sightlines: what you see from the front door, from the sofa, from the dining table, because the most important wall is rarely the biggest one. And the structure: where a large work needs support inside the wall, and where the picture lights or adjustable spots should go, which in a new house is a pencil line and in a finished one is an electrician and a patch.

I am based in Tenafly, so the towns of Bergen County are a short drive: Closter, Alpine, Englewood, Cresskill, Demarest and the ones around them. That matters more than it sounds. Art is planned in the light the room actually has and installed with the furniture in place, so a curator who can be at the house on a Tuesday morning when the electrician is there is a curator whose plan gets built. If the house is going up now, the cheapest decisions of the whole project are made while the drawings are open: which walls are for art, where a large work needs support, where the lighting goes. Beyond the county I serve all of New Jersey, New York City and Tel Aviv, and a good share of my projects come to me through interior designers, architects and brokers on behalf of their clients.
A newly built house in Closter

The Closter residence was newly built when I was brought in: white walls, wide oak floors, a beamed ceiling, black framed glass doors onto the trees. Every finish was right, and the house still had no point of view. I was commissioned to curate a collection that would raise the architectural character of the house and bring depth to the interior design. I worked closely with leading New York City galleries, and the collection brings together works by Jewish and Israeli artists alongside other contemporary voices, hung so that it reads as one collection with one sensibility. In the dining room, three small paintings in blues, pinks and violets hang in a row above the oak table. In the office, one large canvas carries the room alone. In the hall, a large framed work in gold and violet sits above a bench at the foot of the stair, where everyone passes it several times a day.
The result transforms a well designed house into a space with soul, where art and architecture speak the same language.
I managed a gallery in Tel Aviv, I work directly with Israeli artists, and I work with leading New York City galleries, so for a family in Bergen County that wants Israeli and Jewish artists on its walls the question is never whether, only which. Working with your designer, architect or broker
I work alongside architects and interior designers, not around them. I read the drawings, the palette and the furniture plan before I propose a single work, and I put my requests for wall support and lighting into the schedule everyone else is already working from. The designer keeps the house; I bring the art that belongs in it, and I present with the studio or through it, whichever it prefers. What an art curator costs in New Jersey
Art advisors and curators in the industry are usually paid one of three ways: an hourly rate, a flat fee per project, or a percentage of what you buy, which in the industry typically runs from ten to twenty percent, with a retainer for ongoing collection work. I do not publish a rate. I quote each project after a first conversation, based on its scope, and my direct relationships with artists often bring the total cost of the work itself down. In a private home the two overlap, and I do both. The curator's part is the eye and the idea: which works, on which walls, in what relation to each other and to the architecture. The advisor's part is the market: what a work should cost, where to find it, how to negotiate it, and how to get it framed, shipped and hung. While the drawings are still open, before the walls are closed and the lighting is fixed. At that stage the decisions that matter most cost almost nothing: which walls are for art, where a large work needs support inside the wall, where the picture lights go. Once finishes and furniture are chosen I develop the concept and the shortlists, and installation comes last, with the furniture in place.
