למה לא הנדימן כללי?

A large mirror or a small framed print is a job for anyone with a level. A heavy canvas, a framed work under glass the width of a sofa, or a triptych is not. The wall has to hold it, the building has to let it in, and the people carrying it need to know how art behaves. Here is what matters in a New York apartment, and how I handle it.
Why not a general handyman?
Art installers do one thing: move and hang works of art safely. They know how to handle a canvas without touching the surface, how to carry glazed frames, and which hardware suits the wall and the weight. A handyman may be skilled, but a heavy work on the wrong fixing, or a corner knocked in a narrow hallway, is an expensive lesson. New York walls vary a great deal, from old plaster in a prewar building to drywall over metal studs and concrete in newer towers, and each needs a different approach.
What does my building require?
Most Manhattan and Brooklyn buildings with a managing agent have rules for contractors, and art installers count. Typical requirements:
- A certificate of insurance. Proof that the installer carries insurance, often naming the building, the landlord or the managing agent.
- A service elevator booking. Large works cannot use the passenger elevator in many buildings, and the service elevator has fixed hours and dimensions.
- Working hours. Many buildings allow work only on weekdays, within set hours.
Ask your building for its requirements before a large work is delivered. I carry insurance and can provide a certificate of insurance naming the landlord or managing agent on request, and I plan the install around the building's rules, so nothing arrives that cannot get upstairs.
Before install day
- Know the wall. What it is made of and what is behind it, so the right hardware is chosen.
- Measure the route. The service elevator, the doors, the turns in the hallway. A very large work may need to travel crated or be planned differently from the start.
- Agree the exact positions. Heights and centers decided in advance, with the lighting in mind. Plan the lighting before hanging, not after.
- Protect the floors and furniture. A good team brings what it needs.
After hours installs
When a building, a household or an office needs it, my team installs after hours, so life and work carry on. For offices this is often the only sensible way to install; in apartments it can mean fitting around a building's schedule or a family's routine.
One person from choice to wall
I choose and source the art and install it with my own team, so the person who chose the work is there when it goes on the wall. I work with expert framers and printmakers, and I manage the whole chain, production, framing, crating, shipping and installation, within agreed timelines and budgets.
