A move to New York often means arriving with a few boxes of framed things, a lease or a closing date, and a lot of white walls. The instinct is to fill everything in a weekend so the place feels like home. Resist it. Empty walls for a few weeks cost you nothing; the wrong art on the main wall costs you every day.
Which walls come first?
Walk the apartment the way you will live in it. Stand at the front door, sit where you will sit in the evening, lie where you will wake up. The walls you see from those places are the ones that matter. From those sightlines I define the main wall of each space, and it is rarely the biggest one.
In most homes that means two starting points: the wall the living space turns toward, and the wall you see from bed or from the entrance. Put your energy there first. Hallways, the second bedroom and the office can wait until you know how you use them.
What about the art we brought with us?
Plan around it before you buy anything. Lay out what you own, including the pieces you are not sure about anymore, and decide what still belongs. A work that looked right in a house with low ceilings may need a different wall, a different frame, or a partner beside it in a tall New York room. Reframing is often the fastest way to make an old piece feel new in a new place.
Then fill the gaps. Knowing what you already have tells you what is missing: scale, color, a medium you do not own yet, or one work strong enough to hold the main wall.
Live with the light for a while
New York light is not one thing. A west facing living room in a tower gets hard sun in the late afternoon; a garden floor in a townhouse may barely see direct light at all. Watch how the light moves for a few weeks. It decides where a glossy surface will glare, where a work on paper needs protection, and where a picture light will be needed. Plan the lighting before hanging, not after.
Building rules come before install day
Many New York buildings ask for a certificate of insurance before any installer comes in, and set working hours and service elevator bookings. It is easier to know this before a large work is delivered. I carry insurance and can provide a certificate naming your landlord or managing agent, and my own team installs, after hours when a building requires it. I look at the new apartment in person or from plans and photos, go through the art you brought with you, and propose a short selection for the first walls.
