Framing, shipping and installing large scale art: how it works and who manages it
Large works are produced, framed, crated, shipped and hung by a chain of specialists, printmakers, framers, art handlers and installers, and one person has to manage that chain against a timeline and a budget. That is part of my service: I run every stage from the artist's studio to the moment the work is level on your wall, and the job is not complete until it is installed and you are fully satisfied.
Framing is decided with the work in hand: mat, frame and glazing chosen to serve the piece, not to compete with it.

The work you fell in love with in a studio in Italy has to survive the journey to your living room. Most of what can go wrong with art happens on that journey, not in the choosing: a canvas rolled the wrong way, a frame that fights the work, a crate that does not fit the stairwell, a wall that cannot take the weight. Production, framing and installation are a service in their own right at THEODORA, and I treat them as seriously as the selection.
Production
Not every large work arrives finished. Editioned photographs and digital works are produced to order, and how they are produced changes the result: paper or acrylic, matte or gloss, mounted or floating. For a Bauhaus residence in Tel Aviv, a hyper collage digital artwork was printed on glossy anti reflective acrylic to become the central focal point of the home. Gloss for depth, anti reflective so the windows do not end up in the picture. I work with expert printmakers, approve the proofs, and check every print against the artist's intention before it leaves the studio.
Commissioned works are followed from first sketch to final execution. I keep the client updated at each stage, so that there are no surprises when the crate opens.
Framing
A frame should serve the work, not compete with it. For a garden villa in Caesarea, two large scale portraits of women with rich layered texture face the front door in slim contemporary framing, so that the surface stays the subject. Large canvases are often float framed or left unframed on a deep stretcher. Works on paper and photographs need glazing, and the choice of glass changes how a work reads under your lighting.
The framers I work with take the measurements of the wall, not only of the work, and the frame is agreed with you before it is made.
Shipping and crating
Works I have placed came from France, in close collaboration with a leading gallery, from a commission with an Italian artist, and from New York City galleries; shipping is part of almost every project. Each shipment is planned: a custom crate for the work, professional art handlers at both ends, and a clear answer, in writing, to who is responsible for the work at each stage of the journey. Very large canvases can sometimes travel rolled and be restretched on site, which is common practice in the industry and avoids a crate that will not fit through the door. That decision is made with the artist, never without.
Installation
Before install day, the site is surveyed: wall construction, weight, height, sightlines from the doorway and from the seating, the lighting already in place. Then the installers arrive with the right hanging hardware for the wall and the work. Hanging height, spacing and level are set to my brief, and the work is checked before the installers leave. If it does not sit correctly, it is not finished.
A 3.5 meter triptych in Caesarea
For a sea view villa in Caesarea, I commissioned a 3.5 meter triptych from an Italian artist. Three storks at the center symbolize homecoming, strength and belonging, echoing the homeowner's own journey as a new immigrant and the seasonal migration of storks through Israel. Three panels of that size have to be produced, shipped and installed as one image: the gaps between them are part of the composition, and a few millimeters of drift would show from across the room. It hangs on a double height wall, lit from above, and every stage was managed within a defined timeline and an approved budget.

Who manages it
I do. You have one point of contact from the moment a work is chosen until it is on the wall, and one approved budget that covers production, framing, transport and installation. The printmakers, framers and installers work to my brief and my timeline, and the work is not complete until it is installed and you are fully satisfied. If your interior designer is running the project, I coordinate directly with them so the works arrive when the walls are ready; see how I work with interior designers.
If you have a large work to move, frame or install, or a wall waiting for one, write to me with the dimensions and a photo of the space. For the full picture of a project from concept to installation, read how the process works.
Questions people ask
How do you hang a very large or heavy painting safely?
With a site survey first: what the wall is made of, what it can carry, where the studs or the concrete are, and where the work sits in the sightlines. Then professional installers use hardware rated for the weight, often a cleat system that spreads the load across the wall, and the work is leveled and checked against the brief before they leave.
Can a 3 meter artwork get into an apartment with a small elevator?
Usually, with planning. Some large canvases can travel rolled and be restretched on site, which is common practice in the industry, and some works are made as panels, like a triptych, and joined on the wall. The decision is made with the artist before shipping, never on the sidewalk. Measure the route first.
Do you frame digital art and photographs?
Yes. Digital works and photographs are produced to order, and how they are printed and finished is part of the artwork: paper or acrylic, matte or gloss, mounted or floating, framed or edgeless. For one Tel Aviv residence a digital collage was printed on glossy anti reflective acrylic. I decide this with the artist and the client.
Who is responsible if a work is damaged in transit?
That has to be answered in writing before the work moves, and part of my job is making sure it is: who packs, who carries, who is responsible at each stage of the journey. Professional art handlers, a custom crate and clear terms prevent most problems. Ask any advisor or gallery this question before you pay.
Do I need special lighting for a large artwork?
Often, and it is best planned before the work arrives. Direct sun and harsh downlights can damage some materials and flatten others, and a large work usually wants even light across its full surface. I look at the existing lighting during the site survey and advise on what to change, in coordination with your designer or electrician.
Send me one photo of the wall, and a line about the space. I will tell you what I see.
