Art sourcing for interior designers is how a design studio finds, buys and installs art for a client project: through trade programs and wholesale suppliers, galleries and artists, commissions, or an art curator who runs the whole art scope inside the designer's scheme. Trade programs are fastest for many walls, originals and commissions carry the walls a client lives with, and a curator can run all of them for you while the client stays yours. Below, each route with what you get, the lead time, who frames and installs, and how the money works.
The four routes are not exclusive. Spend where people stop and let the catalog carry the walls they pass: trade prints for corridors and secondary walls, one original where the eye lands first, a commission for the wall nothing on the market fits. What goes wrong is rarely the route. It is the order: art is left to the end, when the budget is spent and the lead times no longer fit. Earlier in my career I managed a gallery in Tel Aviv; today I work alongside designers and architects, so I have seen sourcing from both sides.
Designers source art through four routes: trade programs and wholesale suppliers, galleries and artists, commissions, and a curator who takes on the whole art scope. Each trades speed, uniqueness and your time differently.
| Route | What you get | Lead time and installation | How the money works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade programs and wholesale | Mostly prints, editions and framed art from one catalog; some artists offer originals to the trade | Usually the shortest; framing often by the supplier, installation by your team | A trade price for verified design professionals, on terms each program sets |
| Galleries and artists | Original works and small editions, chosen one by one | Available works ship once bought; framing and installation arranged by you or the seller | A gallery's price carries its space, inventory and staff; buying direct moves the vetting to you |
| Commissions | A work made for one wall, one story, one scale | Longest: the timeline is set with the artist before work starts | The price is agreed with the artist at the concept stage, before any work begins |
| Curator partnership | Research, sourcing from any gallery or artist, commissions, framing and installation inside your scheme | Planned against your design timeline; I manage framing, shipping and installation | In most cases less than buying at a gallery or an auction, with the consultation included |
Trade programs are usually the fastest route to art for many walls at once. A print publisher, a framed art maker, an online platform or an artist's studio opens a trade account to verified design professionals and sells its own catalog at a trade price. Wholesale art for interior designers works on the same model at volume: one supplier, consistent framing, sizes that repeat across a floor.
The limit is in the word catalog. You choose from what that supplier offers, mostly prints and open editions, and the same print can hang in other projects across town.
Galleries and artists are the route to original work, one of a kind or in small editions. A gallery's job is to represent its artists and get them the highest price, and a good gallery does that job well: it vets the work, knows the market and stands behind what it sells. For a new build in Closter, New Jersey, I built the collection working closely with leading New York City galleries, placing works by Jewish and Israeli artists alongside other contemporary voices (the Closter project).
Buying from artists directly takes the gallery out of the price and puts its work on your desk: finding the artist, checking condition and edition, agreeing the price in writing, arranging framing and shipping. For a home office in Caesarea, built around the client's two loves, horses and music, I acquired one existing painting and commissioned a second from the same artist, so the two works share a hand.
Commission when the wall is unusual, or the story is personal and nothing on the market says it. A very wide wall, a stairwell, a foyer that needs a pair: these are commission walls. The price, dimensions, materials, delivery and the points at which the client sees progress are agreed with the artist before work starts.
For a sea view villa in Caesarea, I commissioned a 3.5 meter triptych from an Italian artist, three storks at its center, echoing the homeowner's journey as a new immigrant and the seasonal migration of storks through Israel. Nobody could have bought that work; it had to be made. The full process is in how I commission art for a new home.
A curator partnership puts one professional on the whole art scope, working for your client and inside your scheme. It makes sense when the art is more than a finishing line item: originals, a commission, many walls, or a timeline that cannot slip. I represent the client, not a set of artists. I have no closed roster and I am not obligated to any set of artists, so I can reach out to any artist in the world and mix all three routes on one project.
I take research, sourcing, budget, commissions, framing and installation off your plate and stay until the art is on the wall, through the seven steps in how the art advisory process works. I have my own installation team and carry insurance, with a certificate naming the landlord or managing agent on request, and I install after hours when a space must keep working. How I work with studios is on my page for interior designers and architects.

In most cases, buying through a private curator costs your client less than buying the same kind of work at a gallery or a large auction. At auction, many bidders compete for the same work and push the price up. A gallery prices in its space, its inventory and its staff. I carry none of those costs, so in many cases working with me is more affordable than almost anywhere else, and the price includes a private consultation for the client's home or office and my work with you until the art is on the wall. And because I represent the client, the search stays open to any artist. More on cost in what an art advisor costs.
Lead time usually grows with uniqueness: trade stock is fastest, available originals come next, and commissions take longest.
Works on paper and photographs need glazing, and the glass changes how a work reads under the lighting you specified, so choose the glazing with the lighting plan, not after it. Large works need a site survey and the right hardware for the wall and the weight. I run all of this as part of the project, never as a hanging job on its own. The details are in framing and installing large scale art; sizing the big walls is in large wall art ideas.
The client stays yours, and so does the credit. Your drawings, your palette and your intent lead; the art answers them. I present to the client with you or through you, whichever you prefer, and the project is credited to your studio. Homeowners can read their side in working with your interior designer on art.
I am based in Tenafly, New Jersey, and I work with designers and architects in Bergen County, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere. Send me the plans, or a photo of one wall, and a line about the client through my page for designers. I will tell you how I would approach it inside your scheme.

Interior designers often get trade pricing on art through trade programs. A print publisher, framed art maker, online platform or artist's studio opens a trade account to verified design professionals, usually on proof of a design business such as a resale certificate, and offers a trade price on its own catalog. Terms are set by each program. For original work, buying through a private curator is in most cases more affordable than a gallery or an auction, with the consultation included.
Trade art is made for the design trade: mostly prints, open editions and framed pieces from a supplier's catalog, in repeatable sizes, often available quickly and in quantity. Original art is a unique work, or one from a small limited edition, sold by the artist, a gallery or a curator. Some artists also offer originals through trade programs, so the difference is the work, not the channel. Trade art fills walls consistently; original art gives a space something no other project has.
