Gallery wall ideas, and how to hang one like a curator

A gallery wall is a group of framed works hung close together and read as one composition, not a collection of frames. The gallery wall ideas below all follow one rule: treat the whole group as a single artwork. Center it 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor, keep 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) between frames, build it around one anchor piece, and plan it on paper before a single nail goes in.

Five gallery wall layouts drawn to scale: a grid of nine equal frames, a salon hang of mixed sizes, an organic cluster around one large anchor, a row of frames sharing one centerline, and frames resting on a picture ledge
Figure 1תרשים 1The five layouts. Each is treated as a single work, with its center on the 57 to 60 inch line.

Most gallery walls that disappoint fail for one reason: they were assembled, not composed. The frames came as a set, the gaps were judged by eye, and the group went up too high. I have seen it in more than 15 years in the art world, in museums, in a gallery I managed in Tel Aviv and in private homes.

Choose the layout by the wall and by how settled the collection is. Whatever the layout, the whole group is treated as one work.

Table 1Five gallery wall layouts compared
LayoutWhat it looks likeBest wallWhat it needs
The gridIdentical frames and gaps, in rows of two or threeA long hallway, a long sofa, a suite of printsExact, equal gaps: the least forgiving layout
The salon hangMixed sizes hung close, floor to ceiling, as the Paris Salon once hung paintingsStair halls, libraries, double height wallsA clean outer edge: the outermost frames on one imagined rectangle
The organic clusterOne large anchor with smaller works around it, no strict outlineA collection that will keep growingA strong anchor. The most forgiving layout, and the one I recommend most
The centerline rowDifferent sizes, every center on one horizontal lineAbove a console, a bed or a narrow sideboardOne level line at 57 to 60 inches
The ledgeFrames leaning and overlapping on a shelf 2 to 4 inches deepRenters, and anyone still decidingA front lip, set so the group still centers at 57 to 60 inches

Four numbers do the work: the center height, the gap, the width and the size of the anchor.

Elevation drawing of a gallery wall above an 84 inch sofa: the group is 56 inches wide, its lowest frame sits 9 inches above the sofa back, frames are 2.5 inches apart, and the center of the group is marked at 58 inches from the floor
Figure 2The group is about two thirds of the sofa's width, 8 to 10 inches above its back.
57 to 60incenter of the whole group from the floor (145 to 152 cm)
2 to 3inbetween frames, the same gap everywhere (5 to 8 cm)
2/3of the width of the furniture below

Odd or even numbers of frames matter less than one outer shape and one anchor. Around a television, treat the screen as one dark frame in the group, with the same gaps around it.

Two gallery wall groups, one of four frames and one of five, each filling the same dotted outer rectangle around one anchor with equal gaps
Figure 3Four frames or five: one outer shape and one anchor hold the group.

Works that share one thread, around one anchor you love. The thread matters more than the layout: it tells the eye these works belong together. It can be color, subject, medium, the period of the works or the frames, but choose one, two at most. Matching the sofa is not a thread. A wall of black and white photographs with one small oil in deep red has a thread and an accent. A wall with no thread is a pinboard.

Then choose the anchor, the work the rest of the wall answers to. It should be the piece you love most, not the piece that fits the biggest gap. Mix mediums once the thread holds: a work on paper, a small painting, a photograph, even a flat object in a shadow box. Keep the frames in one family, all black, all natural wood or all thin gold, and vary the mats instead: a generous mat gives a small work presence beside a larger one. Mixed frames can work too: whether they do depends on how all the works read together.

Two gallery walls with the same layout: on the left, frames of four different widths; on the right, frames of one width with wider mats on the smallest works, so the group reads as one family
Figure 4Keep one frame family and vary the mats: the mixed group reads as one.

My own rule: leave space for the next work. A collection grows, and a wall that is full on day one has nowhere to go. To start that collection properly, read how to start an art collection.

The same gallery wall twice: first four works hung inside a planned dotted outline with empty places marked, then seven works filling the outline
Figure 5Plan the outer edge for the collection you will have, and leave places inside it.

Plan on paper, test with templates, then nail, anchor first.

Three step drawing of the paper template method: frames traced on kraft paper, each template marked with the hanging point, and the templates taped to the wall with a level line
Figure 6Paper templates, each marked with its hanging point, turn a floor plan into exact nail positions.
  1. Mark the zone. Measure the wall, decide the group's outer size and outline it with painter's tape.
  2. Compose on the floor. Tape the same rectangle on the floor and arrange the works inside it, anchor first. Photograph each version from above.
  3. Make templates. Trace every frame on kraft paper and cut it out. Measure from the top of the frame to the hanging point (the taut wire or the D-ring) and mark that point on the template.
  4. Test on the wall. Tape the templates up, stand back from where you will actually see the wall, and live with it for a day.
  5. Hang the anchor first. Nail through its template mark, then work outward, checking every gap with a spacer block cut to your chosen distance.
  6. Tear the paper away and level. A small dot of museum putty or a clear bumper on the lower corners keeps each frame straight.

For hardware, use two hooks or two D-rings on anything heavier than a small frame, screwed into a stud or into anchors rated well above its weight. Wire on one point lets frames swing; I avoid it on gallery walls.

Stairs, plaster and other hard walls

Side elevation of a staircase gallery wall: the centerline of the group rises parallel to the stair, 57 to 60 inches above the nose of each tread
Figure 7On a stair, the eye-level line climbs with the treads and the group clears the handrail.

On a staircase, the centerline follows the pitch of the stair: measure 57 to 60 inches straight up from the nosing line, the line joining the front edges of the treads, below each work, and connect those points with a chalk or tape line. Keep the group parallel to the handrail and clear of it. On plaster, drill a small pilot hole first; a hammered nail can crack it. On brick, use masonry anchors. If the wall is tiled or glass, a picture rail or a ledge is the honest answer.

The mistakes I see most often

When is it worth calling a curator?

A gallery wall is a small exhibition. When the works are valuable, the wall is tall, or the lighting is still open, plan it with someone who composes walls for a living. I do this for homes and for interior designers who want the art handled, from choosing the works to framing and installation. I am an art curator based in Tenafly, New Jersey, and I work across Bergen County, New Jersey, New York City and California, and online with clients anywhere. Send me a photo of the wall through the contact page.

Questions

Questions people ask

What is the rule for gallery walls?

The rule for a gallery wall is to treat the whole group as one artwork. Center it 57 to 60 inches (145 to 152 cm) from the floor, keep 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) between frames, build around one anchor piece that is two to three times the size of the smallest work, and choose a single thread, such as color, medium or frame, so the works read as a family.

How far apart should frames be on a gallery wall?

Frames on a gallery wall should sit 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) apart on most walls, and up to 4 inches (10 cm) when the frames are large or the wall is very big. What matters most is that the gaps are equal. Cut a block of wood or card to your chosen width and use it as a spacer as you hang.

How many pictures should be in a gallery wall?

A gallery wall has no fixed number of pictures. Three is the smallest group that reads as a gallery wall, five to nine suits most walls above a sofa or bed, and a salon hang on a tall wall can take twenty or more. Decide the outer size of the group first, then fill it with as many works as keep the gaps even.

Are gallery walls out of style in 2026?

Gallery walls built from matching print sets feel dated. Walls built from works you chose do not follow trends: salon walls have been hung for centuries. If your wall has a thread, an anchor and room to grow, it will not look like a trend in five years.

What are common gallery wall mistakes?

The common gallery wall mistakes are hanging the group too high, letting the gaps drift, using only small frames of the same size with no anchor, hanging glass opposite a bright window, and filling the whole wall on day one. Plan with paper templates and a spacer block, and most of these disappear before the first nail.

Send me one photo of the wall, and a line about the space. I will tell you what I see.
