A small print over a long sofa reads like a sticky note on a door: you notice it, but it does not hold the wall. The wall above the sofa is the one most people fill first, and the one where small mistakes show most: a work too small floats, a work too high loses the sofa. These are the rules I use, and why.
How high should art hang above a couch?
Leave 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. You will see 4 to 6 inches recommended too, by Studio McGee among others. I prefer the extra space on a sofa because people lean back, stretch an arm along the top and rest their heads; closer than that, the frame gets knocked and the glass gets smudged. Much more than 10 inches, and the art stops belonging to the sofa and starts floating on the wall.

Then check the center against the 57 to 60 inch eye-level line from how to hang pictures. With a typical sofa back of about 32 inches and a 9 inch gap, a work 32 to 38 inches tall centers at 57 to 60 inches: 32 + 9 + half of 38 is exactly 60, as in Fig. 1. A lower back needs a taller work, a higher back a shorter one. If the center lands far above 60, the work is too tall for that wall: choose a wider, lower format.

What size art above a couch?
The work, or the whole group, should be about two thirds of the sofa's width. For a single wide work you can go up to three quarters. Never go wider than the sofa itself. The ratio gives you the width; it cannot tell you whether the work will hold the wall. A strong work at two thirds beats a thin image stretched to three quarters.

Measure the sofa's full width, arms included. Before you buy, tape the outline of the work on the wall above it, and look from the doorway you usually walk in through. Nearly everyone discovers the work they had in mind is too small.
Six layouts that work above a sofa

One large horizontal work. The calmest and usually the strongest.
A pair. Two vertical works of the same size, 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) apart, read as one wide piece.
A triptych or a row of three. Equal gaps of 2 to 3 inches. Good for a long sofa.
A grid of four or six identical frames, for a series of prints or photographs.
A gallery cluster built around one anchor, for a collection that will grow. The layout rules are in gallery wall ideas.
A picture ledge with a front lip, 8 to 10 inches above the sofa back, for anyone who likes to change the wall. Only light frames, glazed with acrylic, never glass: heads rest just below. Above a bed I do not use a ledge at all.
Sectionals, low backs and sofas under windows

Sectionals. Size the art to the part of the sectional against the wall you are hanging on, and center it on that section's seats, not on the corner or on the whole L.
A sofa off center on its wall. Center the art on the sofa, not on the wall: the two are read as one composition.
Low-back sofas. Keep the 8 to 10 inch gap. If that puts the center well below 57 inches, choose a taller work so the center rises.
A sofa under a window. Do not force art into a strip of wall. Hang it on the side walls, or on the wall facing the sofa, where it will be seen.
A sofa floating in the room. The art goes on the wall people face, not behind the sofa.

Choosing the work itself
The sofa wall is usually the first thing you see in a living room, so I treat the work on it as the main work of the space, not filler. Start from what you love and let the size rules decide the format. The sofa will change before the art does, so match the room's temperature rather than the upholstery: a warm room of wood and linen can take a cool blue painting, and the contrast is what makes both look considered. Light it as well. A ceiling spot aimed at about 30 degrees from vertical keeps reflections off the glass and out of the eyes of whoever sits facing it. Table lamps at each end of the sofa warm the room but do not light the art.
Hang it safely, because heads are below it
Two points of support, two D-rings on two hooks, or a French cleat for heavy works. A single nail lets a frame swing and drop.
Into studs or rated anchors, chosen for at least twice the weight of the work.
Acrylic instead of glass for large glazed frames above a sofa: it is lighter and does not shatter. Ask your framer for an anti-reflective version.
A bumper on each lower corner, so the frame stays straight when someone leans back into the wall.
The mistakes I see most often
A work a third of the sofa's width, floating in the middle of the wall. Go to two thirds, or group it.
Art hung 18 inches or more above the sofa back. Bring it down to 8 to 10 inches.
A pair hung too far apart, which reads as two separate works. Keep them 3 to 4 inches apart.
A wide, heavy frame on a single nail above people's heads.
