קנה המידה הוא ההחלטה הראשונה
הטעות הנפוצה ביותר בלופט היא אמנות שפשוט קטנה מדי. יצירה שהייתה שולטת בחדר שינה נעלמת על קיר של תשעה מטרים תחת תקרה גבוהה. לפני שקונים משהו, בודקים את הגודל מול הקיר ומול המרחק שממנו תראו אותו. לעיתים קרובות התשובה היא יצירה אחת גדולה מאוד, זוג, או טריפטיכון שנקרא כדימוי אחד לאורך הקיר.
יצירות גדולות מאוד הן משהו שכבר ניהלתי. בווילה מול הים בקיסריה, התשובה לקיר ארוך אחד הייתה טריפטיכון של 3.5 מטרים שהוזמן מאמן איטלקי, ובמרכזו שלוש חסידות, שנעשה בשביל הקיר הזה והסיפור של המשפחה הזאת. ראו את פרויקט הטריפטיכון.
לבנים, עמודים וחלונות
לבנים חשופות הן רקע חזק עם מרקם וצבע משלו; יצירה שנלחמת בו נראית עצבנית, ויצירה שמנוגדת לו בצורה נקייה, בקנה מידה, בצבע או במשטח, נראית מכוונת. עמודים מחלקים חלל ארוך למפרשים, וכל מפרש יכול להיות קיר בפני עצמו. חלונות גדולים פירושם אור קשה בשעות מסוימות, ולכן הזיגוג, הגימור והמיקום נבחרים עם האור בחשבון. תכננו את התאורה לפני התלייה.
מתוך קווי המבט
ללופט פתוח יש מעט דלתות והרבה מבטים. מהכניסה, מהמטבח ומפינת הישיבה אני קוראת את קווי המבט ומגדירה את הקיר המרכזי, שכמעט אף פעם אינו הגדול ביותר. שאר החלל מתוכנן משם, כך שהיצירות מתייחסות זו לזו לאורך החלל ולא מתחרות.

A loft gives you what most New York apartments cannot: long walls, high ceilings and room to step back. It also brings cast iron columns, exposed brick, big windows and strong light that can overpower timid work. Here is how I think about art for a loft in Tribeca, SoHo or the West Village.
Scale is the first decision
The most common mistake in a loft is art that is simply too small. A work that would dominate a bedroom disappears on a 30 foot wall under a high ceiling. Before anything is bought, the size is tested against the wall and the distance you will see it from. Often the answer is one very large work, a pair, or a triptych that reads as one image across the wall.
Very large work is something I have managed before. For a sea view villa in Caesarea, the answer to one long wall was a 3.5 meter triptych commissioned from an Italian artist, three storks at its center, made for that wall and that family's story. See the triptych project.
Brick, columns and windows
Exposed brick is a strong background with its own texture and color; work that fights it looks nervous, work that contrasts with it cleanly, in scale, color or surface, looks deliberate. Columns break a long space into bays, and each bay can be treated as its own wall. Big windows mean hard light at certain hours, so glazing, finish and placement are chosen with the light in mind. Plan the lighting before hanging.
From the sightlines
An open loft has few doors and many views. From the entrance, the kitchen and the seating I read the sightlines and define the main wall, which is rarely the biggest one. The rest of the space is planned from there, so the works relate to each other across the room rather than competing.
When nothing fits the wall, commission
When nothing on the market is right for a very long or very tall wall, a commission is often the answer: a work created for that space and identity. Logistics: getting it upstairs
Downtown buildings have freight elevators of fixed size, stairs that turn, and rules for contractors. A very large work has to be planned around them from the start: whether it travels crated, in panels, or is planned differently. I carry insurance, can provide the certificate of insurance many buildings require, and my team installs, after hours when needed. Downtown galleries, on foot
Tribeca and SoHo are among the densest gallery neighborhoods in New York, and some clients like to see work in person.
