A brownstone or townhouse in Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene or Carroll Gardens asks different things of art than an apartment does. The rooms are often narrow and tall, the walls are broken by windows, fireplaces and doorways, and the house is read vertically, floor by floor, as much as room by room. Here is how I approach it.
The parlor floor
The parlor floor is where the house shows itself: high ceilings, long walls between tall windows, often a mantel. The long wall usually wants one strong work or a pair that reads as one, not a scatter of frames. Scale matters more than people expect, because the ceiling height makes average sized works look small. From the sightlines, from the entrance, from the seating, I define the main wall, and it is not always the longest one.
The stair hall
A stair hall gives you something most apartments never have: a vertical run that people walk past every day. It can hold a sequence, works that follow the rise of the stair, or one tall work seen from below and above. Hanging heights follow the stair, not the floor, and the viewing distance is short, so the work has to reward a close look.
Upstairs
Bedrooms and a study on the upper floors can be quieter and more personal. There are no fixed rules for which wall gets the strongest work; it depends on the space and on you. What I look at is where you wake up, where you work, and what you want to see when the door closes.
Old walls, and what they need
Many brownstones still have original plaster, sometimes over brick, and a picture rail in some rooms. Plaster needs the right hardware and a careful team, and a heavy work may be better hung from a rail or planned with support in the wall. Renovating? Plan the art before the plaster
If the house is being renovated, bring the art in while the drawings are still open. Picture lighting, power for a lit work, support in the wall for heavy pieces, and which walls stay solid are all far easier to decide on paper than after the walls are finished. I can work from the architect's and designer's plans, and I work alongside them, not around them. Plan the lighting before hanging.
