For a private home in Ramat Gan I placed a large format photograph by a Korean artist, two figures in ceremonial dress, at the heart of the living space. The client had come back from a trip to Korea that changed them, and the work gives the room that memory.

החלל והאדם
בית פרטי ברמת גן: ארונות עץ אלון בהיר, ספה לבנה ועמוקה, כלי טרקוטה לאורך מדף אלון נמוך, אור יום מהמרפסת. בין שני גושי הארונות, במרכז חלל המגורים, חיכה קיר אחד. בעלי הבית חזרו מקוריאה, והמסע שינה אותם. את זה הבית היה צריך להחזיק. לא מזכרת. משהו עם המשקל של מה שהם הרגישו שם.
מה החלל ביקש
בריף כזה עוסק באדם, לא בפלטת צבעים. הקשבתי למה בדיוק השתנה: תחושה של טקס, של שקט, של דברים שנעשים כראוי. היצירה הייתה צריכה להעביר את התחושה הזאת גם לאורח שמעולם לא היה בקוריאה, ולשבת בלב החדר בלי להפוך את חלל המגורים לחדר תמטי. לגודל הייתה חשיבות. קטן מדי, וזו גלויה על מדף. רועש מדי, והחדר מאבד את השקט שלו.
מה ענה על זה
צילום בפורמט גדול של אמן קוריאני: שתי דמויות בלבוש טקסי, שקטות, פורמליות, מלאות נוכחות. הצבתי אותו בלב חלל המגורים, על הקיר שהחדר ממילא פונה אליו, עם מדף האלון וכלי הטרקוטה מתחתיו. הירוק והוורוד הרכים של הלבוש פוגשים את האלון ואת הטרקוטה כאילו נבחרו יחד. התיאור הטוב ביותר שיש לי למה שהיצירה עושה הוא שלוש מילים: "זה נותן לזה זיכרון." לא מצאתי תיאור טוב יותר למה שאמנות עושה בבית.
מה זה דרש
קודם כול להקשיב, לפני שהצעתי תמונה אחת. אחר כך מחקר ואיתור דרך רשת האמנים והיוצרים שלי, החלטה על קנה מידה מול הקיר, מסגור והתקנה. קונספט, בחירה, לוגיסטיקה ותלייה, מקצה לקצה. העבודה הסתיימה רק כשהצילום היה תלוי ובעלי הבית היו מרוצים ממנו.
A private home in Ramat Gan: pale oak cabinetry, a deep white sofa, terracotta vessels along a low oak shelf, daylight from the terrace. Between the two runs of cabinets, at the center of the living space, one wall was waiting. The client had come back from Korea, and the trip had changed them. That was what the house needed to hold. Not a souvenir. Something with the weight of what they had felt there.
What it asked for
A brief like this is about a person, not a palette. I listened for what exactly had changed: a sense of ritual, of stillness, of ceremony done properly. The work had to carry that feeling to a guest who had never been to Korea, and it had to sit at the heart of the room without turning the living space into a themed one. Scale mattered. Too small and it becomes a postcard on a shelf. Too loud and the room loses its calm.
What answered it
A large format photograph by a Korean artist: two figures in ceremonial dress, quiet, formal, full of presence. I placed it at the heart of the living space, on the wall the room already turns toward, with the oak shelf and the terracotta beneath it. The soft green and pink of the dress meet the oak and the terracotta as if they had been chosen together. The best description I have of what it does is three words: "It gives it memory." I have not found a better one for what art does in a home.
What it took
Listening first, before I proposed a single image. Then research and sourcing through my network of artists and makers, a decision on scale against the wall, framing, and installation. Concept, selection, logistics and hanging, handled end to end. The work was done only when the photograph was up and the client was satisfied with it.
