In the foyer of a garden villa in Caesarea I placed two large scale portraits of women, painted with rich layered texture, facing the front door so they are the first thing anyone sees on entering. החלל והאדם

וילה עם גינה בקיסריה, בהירה ונקייה בקוויה: מבואה ארוכה עם רצפות בהירות, דלת כניסה שחורה, גרם מדרגות פתוח, קיר מראות, ספסל. הבית נגמר באיפוק, והכניסה נשארה ריקה. מה שיוצב שם ייראה על ידי כל מי שעובר בדלת, לשנייה או שתיים לכל היותר, ויקבע את הטון לכל הבית.

מה החלל ביקש

נוכחות, מהר. מבואה לא נותנת ליצירה זמן להיבחן; קוראים אותה בדרך פנימה וזוכרים אותה בדרך החוצה. קנה המידה היה צריך להתאים לגובה הקירות. המסגור היה צריך להיות שקט, כדי שהיצירה תיקרא כחלק מהאדריכלות ולא כתמונות שנתלו עליה. והכניסה הייתה צריכה לקבל אנשים בחום ובצבע, בבית שמלבד זאת כולו לבן, אפור ועץ.

מה ענה על זה

שני דיוקנאות בקנה מידה גדול של נשים, גבוהים וצרים, מצוירים במרקם עשיר ורב שכבתי. האחד בנוי בירוקים עם כתר של ורוד; השני בכחולים עמוקים עם התלקחות של כתום; בשניהם קטעים קטנים של זהב. מהדלת קוראים אותם כנוכחות וכצבע. מקרוב קוראים אותם כצבע שנבנה בשכבות שרוצים לגעת בהן. הצבתי אותם מול דלת הכניסה, כך שחילופי הדברים הראשונים בבית הם בין מי שמגיע לבין שתי הנשים שמקבלות את פניו.

מה זה דרש

לבחור זוג ולא יצירה בודדת, ולבחור שתיים שחולקות שפה: אותו קנה מידה, אותו מרקם, אותו מסגור, כך שהן הופכות לאמירה אחת על הבית. מסגור עכשווי דק בשחור, שנועד להגן על הקצה ואז לזוז מהדרך. מיקום, קנה מידה ומסגור הוחלטו יחד, לא בזה אחר זה, ולכן המבואה מרגישה מיושבת ולא מקושטת. אחר כך לוגיסטיקה והתקנה, וסיום רק כששני הדיוקנאות היו תלויים ובעלי הבית נכנסו הביתה מרוצים.

The space and the person

A garden villa in Caesarea, bright and clean lined: a long foyer with pale floors, a black front door, an open staircase, a mirrored wall, a bench. The house had been finished with restraint and the entrance was still bare. Whatever went there would be seen by everyone who came through the door, for a second or two at most, and it would set the tone for the whole house.

What it asked for

Presence, fast. A foyer does not give a work time to be studied; it is read on the way in and remembered on the way out. The scale had to match the height of the walls. The framing had to be quiet, so the work read as part of the architecture and not as pictures hung on it. And the entrance needed to greet people with warmth and color, in a house that is otherwise white, grey and wood.

What answered it

Two large scale portraits of women, tall and narrow, painted with rich, layered texture. One is built in greens with a crown of pink; the other in deep blues with a flare of orange; both carry small passages of gold. From the door they read as presence and color. Up close they read as paint, built up in layers you want to touch. I placed them facing the front door, so the first exchange in the house is between the person arriving and the two women who meet them.

What it took

Choosing a pair rather than a single work, and choosing two that share a language: same scale, same texture, same framing, so they become one statement about the house. Slim contemporary framing in black, specified to protect the edge and then get out of the way. Placement, scale and framing were decided together, not one after the other, which is why the foyer feels settled rather than decorated. Then logistics and installation, finished only when both portraits were up and the owners were happy walking in.
