Tel Aviv private residence: a painting commissioned from the Shtisel artist

For a private residence in Tel Aviv, I commissioned a painting from the artist whose paintings appeared in the Israeli series Shtisel, in response to the client's love for the show's intimate imagery. The result is a mother caressing her baby, rendered with quiet warmth, hung on the concrete column between the sea and the city.

בין הים לעיר
לסלון יש את הים התיכון מצד אחד ואת קו הרקיע של תל אביב מהצד השני: שני קירות זכוכית, רצפת בטון מלוטש, ובין החלונות עמוד בטון יחיד עם ספוט מעליו. החוף והטיילת ממש למטה. זה חדר בהיר, קשה ויפה, וכל מה שבו מביט החוצה. הלקוח אהב את הסדרה הישראלית שטיסל, ובמיוחד את הציורים שבתוכה, הדימויים השקטים והאינטימיים שבלב הסיפור.
למה הזמנה, ולא קנייה
העמוד היה הקיר היחיד שחשוב, ורואים אותו מכל נקודה בחדר. מה שיוצב עליו היה צריך להחזיק מעמד מול הים ולתת לחלל את הדבר האחד שהחלונות לא יכולים לתת: פנימיות. הקשר של הלקוח היה לאותה יד ולאותו שקט, ולכן במקום לקנות פניתי לאמן שציוריו הופיעו בשטיסל והזמנתי ממנו עבודה בתגובה.
הציור
אם מלטפת את תינוקה: יושבת על כיסא אדום פשוט, עטופה בכחול, על רקע כהה, מצוירת בחום שקט. על העמוד, מוארת מלמעלה, היא עושה בדיוק את מה שהבריף קיווה לו. החלונות מושכים את העין החוצה אל המים ואל המגדלים; הציור מושך אותה בחזרה אל תוך החדר. ללקוח יש את הסיפור שמאחוריה, והוא לעולם לא צריך לספר אותו כדי שהעבודה תחזיק.
מה כרוך בהזמנת עבודה
הזמנת עבודה שונה מקנייה, ואני מנהלת אותה באותה דרך בכל פרויקט: פונה לאמן, מתרגמת את המשאלה של הלקוח למונחים שאמן יכול לעבוד איתם, ומסכמת נושא, קנה מידה ולוח זמנים לפני שמתחילה עבודה כלשהי, כדי שאף צד לא יופתע. ואז משלוח והתקנה, כאן על משטח בטון עם התאורה מכוונת לציור. העבודה גמורה כשהיא תלויה והלקוח עומד מולה, בשקט.
The living room has the Mediterranean on one side and the Tel Aviv skyline on the other: two walls of glass, a polished concrete floor, and between the windows a single concrete column with a spotlight above it. The beach and the promenade are directly below. It is a bright, hard, beautiful room, and everything in it looks outward. The client loved the Israeli series Shtisel, and specifically the paintings inside it, the still, intimate images at the heart of the story.
Why a commission, not a purchase
The column was the only wall that mattered, and it is seen from every point in the room. Whatever went on it had to hold its own against the sea and give the space the one thing the windows cannot: interiority. The client's attachment was to that hand and that quietness, so instead of buying, I went to the artist whose paintings appeared in Shtisel and commissioned a work in response.
The painting
A mother caressing her baby: seated on a plain red chair, wrapped in blue, against a dark ground, rendered with quiet warmth. On the column, lit from above, it does what the brief hoped. The windows pull the eye out to the water and the towers; the painting pulls it back into the room. The client has the story behind it and never has to tell it for the work to hold.
What commissioning involves
Commissioning is different from buying, and I manage it the same way on every project: I approach the artist, translate the client's wish into terms an artist can work with, and agree the subject, scale and timeline before any work begins, so neither side is surprised. Then delivery and installation, here on a concrete surface with the light set to the painting. The work is finished when it is hung and the client is standing in front of it, quiet.
